Ownership Transfer Taking Forever ?

Anyone else having challenges getting ownership transferred?

I opened a case immediately after taking position of my 2022 R1T that I purchased from a dealership. I provided the bill of sale and a copy of my drivers license as required. I received acknowledgment that they had what was needed. Since then it’s been over 10 days with no transfer. I called and emailed and only received a generic email saying they’re having technical difficulties. Not sure what the heck that means….technical difficulties with their system or with my specific car???

I emailed and called requesting to speak with a supervisor which was DENIED. What kind of company doesn’t allow you to escalate to a supervisor - VERY CONCERNING!!

Apparently there is nothing I can do but sit on my hands and wait ….

It took a couple of weeks for mine my guide was on vacation. I also had to bug the dealer I purchased from because I didn’t not receive the title. At some point you should see your name change in vehicle and then you can setup phone as key. Hang in there transfer will happen.

Rivian doesn't let you escalate when they don't consider you the owner.

1. Once you purchase the vehicle, you will need to contact Rivian and find out who is the Guide to the vehicle. (The previous only turned in the Key Fob. No key cards or Wrist Key)

2. Once you get the guide info, you will need to provide a copy of the bill of sale, front & back of your driver’s license. I also included the title request form as well.

3. Guide will say it takes 7-10 days to transfer ownership to your name. ( the previous owner can still access your vehicle since the key cards and key band is still tied to the vehicle, possible location as well)

4.Once the vehicle is transferred over, you will see it on your Rivian App now. They (Rivian service) transferred all the keys to me under the driver keys ( but still do not have them physically and had the same serial numbers) so I deactivated them in the app and ordered 2 new cards and a key band.

Yep, did everything in step 1-2 and on day 10 of 3…

Apparently I was *very* lucky with my transfer. Picked up a '23 R1S from a dealership on a Thursday. Used the support/chat feature from the Rivian site and initiated the transfer process with a support rep. I was directed to send an email with copies of my driver's license/bill of sale/registration. Less than 24 hrs later, I received the welcome message on the center screen and my ownership transfer was completed.

BTW - Love love love my R1S

Wow! Jealous, sounds like you were very lucky! I’m definitely loving the R1T but feeling I’m not fully there yet since I can’t use charging network, save any preferences, and can’t open tickets for several issues including a jammed bed cover, TPMS, and place in line for Tesla adapter. Hence my impatience …

You cannot use Rivian Adventure Network but nothing is stoping you from using EVgo, Electrify America, Tesla Magic Dock (with Tesla App). And you could try Rivian Adventure Network it may just get billed to previous owner ;). I bet you could open a support ticket via Rivian.com site since you cannot use app.

Someone finally bought my R1T this week from the dealership I traded it in to. I got an email from Rivian asking me to confirm I sold it 2 days ago. I confirmed that I sold it and the vehicle disappeared from my app today. Not sure how long they wait for the previous owner to respond before they move forward.

Frustrating ?

Yeah they have been working on streamlining the process for well over a year now.

If your concerned about access to the vehicle and privacy here are some things you can do until the transfer is complete.

It took them roughly a week to get my stuff transferred over when I bought mine. My motto has always been “squeaky wheel gets the oil.” I’d message them everyday through the app until they get it transferred.

I made an account just to respond to this. I am in the same boat. I have been waiting just over a month. The best answer I have gotten is that someone traded their truck into rivian, and since rivian doesn't sell used vehicles (I guess?), they auctioned it to a dealer, who I bought it from. Apparently that extra step is "causing issues with their system".. paraphrasing there, but you get the point.

It is very frustrating. I've had three teslas, all of which had app functionality immediately, and ownership transfers happened within a day. Regardless. App functionality and being able to schedule service is what I am looking forward to. I was also told that I would be able to schedule service without an ownership transfer, which is not the case. The service department won't do anything.

Someone mentioned a squeaky wheel- I agree. In this case however it hasn't helped me. I have emailed back and forth almost 20 times now, had at least ten phone conversations, and have used the various chat features probably 5 or 6 times. Everyone is nice, but no one is helpful.

I'm usually pointed to another department that then points me back in the direction I came. Every person has just said sorry we can't do anything until the ownership transfer happens.

When will that happen? What is the exact issue? Who knows. It seems like this should be an easy fix, but if I've talked to this many people spending that much time telling me there's nothing they can do, then maybe there is some difficulty to it. I don't know. These are first world problems, but either way, it's frustrating.

if rivian would have just sold the vehicle themselves I would have bought it from them and probably would be preconditioning the climate from my phone right now.


Hopefully we get some good news soon! I submitted my transfer stuff over a month ago.
