Does anyone know about optima releasing this upgrade. I was reading about it, and optima was stating the 12V battery upgrade aids in range, and power accessory (compressor/AC etc) usage. I will be at king of hammers for the rivian/optima/Volta event. I’m sure they will have info. Wondering if you guys have heard anything?

I’d be worried this would void some sort of Rivian warranty.

If I recall they did mention something about it being available eventually, but that was some time ago. @DCE has been active here I'm sure they could answer your question or wait till you see them in person at KOH.

Yeah,
I could see that. I hoping it would just be like replacing a regular car battery. The optima ones are just supposed to be more efficient, and hold more charge so the battery pack isn’t impacted from recharging the 12v battery system.

I don't believe that mods can be used to void the warranty. But it doesn't mean that the service tech won't blame the fancy batteries and push the issue back on the owner.

These batteries may be a good choice post warranty.

Manufacturers have to prove it was your modification that caused the issue to avoid fixing whatever under warranty. Changing out a 12v battery is a non-issue. These things aren't rocket science.

Other way around - the manufacturer can easily deny coverage and then the consumer must prove the modifications were not the cause of the failure.

You're talking about what position a manufacturer might take. I'm talking about the law - Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

Sure, they can say 'you broke it', but if replacing my 12v batteries with LiFEPo was identified by the manufacturer as voiding the warranty for some later fault I'd immediately contact a lawyer to draft a stern letter under the above law.

I know what law your referring to and you’re correct in what it says. In reality the manufacturer can just out spend you and keep your vehicle locked away as evidence during litigation. It’s a fight not often won if the dealer wants to contest it.

And once again, the Rivian tax is added… $230+ for a battery??
That’s actually not bad. A good lithium battery for a motorcycle is $150+, a good lithium for my travel trailer is $700+. Even just a good lead acid AGM battery for a normal car is $300+.

The main issue with drop in LiFePo4 for Rivians will be below freezing temperatures - you can't charge them at all <32F. This means that the battery compartment or battery itself would need to be heated.

Or the batteries would need heating elements. My trailer lithiums are self heating and will charge well below 0°F as a result.
