Thank you so much. No drone. It's an Insta360 camera mounted on a selfie-stick. You can see the shadow of the selfie stick attached to the car on the ground from time to time. It becomes invisible in the final image as the images are stitched together. All the creativity is done in post, on software. All you have to do is remember to hit record and have a good image setting on the camera.
Which mount did you use for the selfie stick? Nice job!

...and here is the clamp for the front tow hook I used. (I just bought a second 48" or so regular selfie stick and attached to it.) However, you really have to twist the nut tight. I used a second velcro strap through the front air grill and back around the stick to steady it more. This was more wobbly than the rear glass one.

Glad you were able to get out to the Ouray area and got the tires dirty. That part of the state is easily my favorite! I was on Engineer last summer and happened across another FG R1T at the top of the pass shortly after getting stopped by a USFS Ranger who wanted to chat about the truck as it was the first one he'd seen on the trails.

Aaron, have you done the Mineral Creek section out of Ouray? It has a more difficult rating and an off-camber Boulder section I see abt 2.5 miles in. Looks a bit more butt pucker.

Yo, what tires are you running? That’s some aggressive sidewall action. 🙂

Really nice write-up and video. I was down that way a month ago, but still running my "down to steel belt" stock Pirelli's and didn't want to chance it.

After watching the video I'm realizing I probably could have made it work!

Will absolutely do next time I'm down there and incorporate it into a Wheeler Geological Area out-and-back (now that I have my new tires)!

Very cool! Yes DO it! The reinforced side walls of the LT’s gave me bunch more confidence over the stock XL Pirelli’s, but I’m sure it would be fine. I have a full size spare in the cargo area. I only had it in “highest” suspension abt 3 times over some larger boulders. But “high” 98% otherwise.

Absolute butt-pucker in a couple places. I haven't done it in the Rivian yet, but have done it several times in my built 4Runner. I would've done it last year, but I was solo and didn't have a spotter in case I needed one. I know of at least one R1S that's done it already though. I've also never done Mineral going down...I always did it coming up from Ouray and then took Corkscrew back down.

This image of the off-camber Boulder at mile 2.44 may be enough for me to skip, especially if wet…my nuts too small…

Geez, that specific spot is actually one of the easier obstacles on that trail. Going up it is probably easier than going down though. As easy as the trails in the San Juans actually are, the difficulty is mostly just in the trails largely being narrow shelf roads and it's so easy to lose focus and dip a wheel off the trail or try to climb too high up a rock to allow another vehicle to pass, etc. Once one goes off it's difficult to impossible to get it back on the trail without another vehicle with a winch or even a tow strap. I do know someone that wound up with their rig wedged against a couple small trees as the only thing keeping them from rolling a couple hundred feet down a cliff.

One of these days I'd love to get a small group of Rivian together to run trails down there. When I had the 4Runner I participated several times in the FJ Summit event as a trail leader and loved every minute of it. That event died during COVID, but has been superseded by Rocky Mountain Toyota Roundup and a good buddy of mine runs the event.

We went up the mineral creek section in sept 2022, it was tougher than other trails (California, cinnamon, the rest of engineer) but honestly no problem. Just pick a smart line and press the accelerator. Either my wife or I spotted a few sections but it always felt silly because it’d be like “wow that’s a big rock, can you get out and make sure we’re good?” And then there is six inches of clearance above the rock. Spun tires a few times but never had a problem.

Thank you for posting! I was looking for exactly this. I bought my R1S for exactly this (and also a great daily driver). It easily did Argentine Pass but I wasn't sure it could handle the whole Alpine loop in the San Juans. Yay! (I am not brave enough to try Black Bear pass, maybe you or Brent??)

Thanks! Yes, no issue with the Alpine Loop, do it!-I've been challenged to do B.B. by another fellow Rivian owner next year with him, but I'm afraid my "boys aint swingin' that low". Lol!
