48amp charger needs a 60amp breaker and the proper wire size
Correct, but it looks like it's a 60amp breaker connected to a nema 14-50 / 50amp receptacle. That's not to code

Sounds like they up sized the breaker anticipating the receptacle will be switched out to a hardwired evse

I took NFPA 70E training many years ago, and this thread has served to remind me not to mess with sparky things.

Also, Taycans with the optional 19.2 kW onboard charger are cool. Mmm, 100 amp breakers.

Yeah some crazy amperage there. That kind of charging speed is insane

Appreciate the responses and discussion.

Reached out to my electrician who did the work here (mostly because I was curious - I try to stay in my lane but wanting to learn more as I get up to speed with the new truck) to ask what I have and he said it’s a NEMA 14-50 on a 50amp breaker (not 60 like I thought) but he ran 4 AWG wire which sounds like it’s supposed to help streamline if I hardwire and need to upgrade to 60amp in the future (if I’m understanding correctly).

That sounds good. Make sure 4 awg fits your charger connection. May need a junction with a 6 awg short whip to charger

You guys are amazing! Thank you so much for the response - all great points. Now, let's see how my delivery window changes in the next few days :D
When we got our first PHEV in 2018 we had an electrician change out the 110v outlet to a 220v outlet in the garage. Bought a 40 amp ChargePoint charger and a stud finder and mounted it ourselves to the wall and plugged it in. It charges the Rivian 15-20 miles/hour so overnight charging is perfect for us for daily use. I can take the charger with me if we move but to the earlier threads having 220v ports in the garage is a selling pt in a home sale.

I see many new homes that market a "rough in for EV charger". This is not a 14-50 outlet but rather wiring and circuit already there. When we were looking at a new to us home a few years ago EV charging was one of our primary considerations. We wanted to be sure it was going to be an easy install. Had we come across a home with a 60 amp circuit and 48amp charger that would have made the top of the list. Reason being the charger and installation is a significant cost that we wouldn't have had to worry about.

In 2 years, the likelihood of whoever you sell to having an EV will also increase so the charger may be a selling point. We were home shopping a while back and one of the homes had an immaculate garage with dual EV chargers. I can barely recall anything else about that house but the garage/EV chargers are still a vivid memory.

We currently have 2 Autel Maxichargers (in different garages) both with plugs. One is on a 60 Amp and the other on a 50. Both work great and the difference in charging speed is trivial in the grand scheme of things.
Since you have 2 of the Autels, can you tell me how well the app works with the 2 different units? Is it easy to switch between the 2 chargers and change settings, etc? Can you assign settings to one charger or the other and they stick?

I rarely use the app but you can simply name each charger. Very straightforward. It's easy for us because we have one at each house, so it sense the right one via bluetooth.
