My R1S was previously silent while charging.
Took it in for service at the Chicago Service Center where it remained for the past 2 weeks (that's a post for another time).
Repairs were not charging related (A/C line repair to eliminate knocking noise and body panel alignment).
Upon return home yesterday I went into my garage and heard for the first time an audible whining noise while charging. It remained until I approached with key FOB/phone and R1S unlocked. At that point the whining sound "wound down" and stopped with car unlocked.
Issue repeats.
  • Silent upon plug in and initial charging
  • Whining noise begins after 5-10 mins and persists until vehicle is unlocked
  • Upon unlocking noise "winds down"
Again, charging has always been silent until this occurrence.
Not a terrible noise and not even all that loud. If it had always done this I might have thought it was normal. But since previous charging was always silent, it is noteworthy.
Anyone familiar/experienced with this issue?

Heated garage? Temps in Chicago dropped, might be keeping the battery temp up.

Try turning off the climate controls before exiting the vehicle, close the doors, lock the vehicle, wait a sec, unlock and start charging.

Also check your charging summary for abnormal "accessory" use.

Last winter mine would spin up a compressor while charging and I'd get almost no mileage from my 120V charging. I had to let it do a deep sleep to fix the issue, but it would come back a few days later.

Good thought @Craigins thanks! Garage is insulated and drywalled, but there's an open window so it is definitely cooler. The temp drop is certainly a control variable vs. 2 weeks ago when we last home charged it.
Did a reset today while chatting with service in the app. Issue persists. Good news is that it seems to be charing fine - just odd that this noise was entirely absent since we owned it until now.
Will see if temp fluctuation eliminates it (supposed to be nicer again tomorrow).
Thanks!
Curious - when you reference "a deep sleep" what does that mean?

Fan/pump sounds are normal while charging. Maybe if you had an A/C issue, it was _not_ normal prior to the repair?

Thanks @R.I.P. - I appreciate the thought and insight. The a/c repair was two lines knocking into each other and resonating (from the rear up through the driver side front of cabin) but definitely not up front. This noise is coming directly form the front exterior near the charging unit itself.

The onboard charger is liquid cooled, often causing the sounds you describe. Why you did not hear them before the repair is the mystery. It is possible they fixed something & failed to tell you about it.

Deep sleep, leave the vehicle off the charger, lock it and keep phones and keys away from the vehicle for about an hour.

That should trigger a deep sleep. It helps reset things that manual resets don't cover.
