Rivian Automotive, Inc. (NASDAQ: RIVN) today announced production totals for the quarter ending December 31, 2022. The company produced 10,020 vehicles at its manufacturing facility in Normal, Illinois and delivered 8,054 vehicles during the same period.

On a full-year 2022 basis, the company produced 24,337 vehicles and delivered 20,332 vehicles.

RJ's note to team, apparently:

Hi team!
I want to thank you for all your energy and collective effort as we closed our first full year of production. Our official production and delivery numbers for 2022:
  • Q4 factory gated: 10,020
    • Q4 delivered: 8,054
      • 2022 factory gated: 24,337
      • 2022 delivered: 20,332
      • 2022 off the line: 25,051
714 vehicles are currently being factory gated, including those awaiting parts, software validation, wheel alignment, upfits and charging. As they are not 100% finished, they can’t count toward our official figure – however with more than 25,000 driving off General Assembly, this is an incredible achievement and testament to the commitment and passion of our entire team. Thank you!
There were many headwinds in 2022. Considering the supply chain issues that caused the plant to close for 20 days and shut down early on 50 days in the last 12 months, and the inclement weather that forced us to close for an additional 5 days—our team stayed focused and worked through the challenges together. You stayed late, worked extra shifts, came in on holidays and worked through our operational challenges as we ramped. None of this is possible without you.
As we look ahead to 2023, I’m more confident than ever in our success and ability to continue to ramp thanks to the drive and dedication of our team.
Thank you all again, RJ

I'm still agreeing that 24,xxx is a huge achievement this past year but it's likely the market won't see it as a win.
Similar story over at TSLA, they 'missed' their target also (while hitting over 400k units last quarter and growing 40% YoY).

The difference between Rivian and Tesla is that Tesla had vehicles that didn’t have buyers. While I agree it is a shame that Rivian didn’t hit it’s target I think the market will care more about the 2023 forecast.

Have you heard of the R1 shop sir? Rivian has plenty of trucks that don’t have buyers.

Let’s hope they set a proper (or not softball) target. That means minimum 60k and hopefully more like 75k.

More like trucks that haven't been matched to buyers yet. Rivian still has a backlog of people with pre-orders waiting for a vehicle which is different from Tesla's current situation.

I think you missed his point.

Rivian has a huge queue of people waiting for vehicles, the R1 shop was created to allow some of the earlier preorder people to pick a different configuration to get a vehicle earlier rather than wait for their specific configuration.

Tesla no longer has a backlog of people and has a large inventory of vehicles waiting for a buyer.

That is a significant difference but most likely driven by the new tax credit that Tesla is now available for. It will be interesting to see how Q1 and Q2 go for Tesla now. It will tell more about why the inventory glut in Q4, forced by people waiting for the tax credit to kick in or lower demand for the vehicles.
