Hello people ?

Recently took delivery of R1S. About a month and half in to the ownership.

Lately started observing loud noise when ride height changes to higher or lower. Have so far observed during hold position only but prior never heard the loud creaking noise when the car was in hold and ride height changed.

Have opened ticket but wondering if anyone else have seen the issue before? Did it require a service center visit?

For now I have disabled the auto ride height setting just to be safe.

It is likely your mechanical brakes gripping the discs while rotating as the suspension changes geometry. Try making the adjustment with the vehicle slightly in motion, or in neutral and I doubt you will hear that noise.

Keep your foot off of the brake and see if it still does the same.

For reference, mine will still make the noise with foot off the brake (in Hold or Park). If I feather the accelerator just to get it out of Hold, it will release the brakes and will not make that noise when lowering/raising.

What was really shocking was the first time I raised the ride height and got out of the truck to watch from the outside. Watching the truck roll ever so slightly forward while the height changed was a little puckering not knowing what was going on...?

Suspension geometry changes with height change and consequently wheels will rotate. When parked and brake hold engaged all of the movement and forces created have to fight against force of the brake hold. Movement against friction of brakes generates noise. That’s normal and should be expected whenever you change heights with hold engaged. Since there is no sound clip and you characterized it for being loud, there’s no telling if what you heard is indeed beyond what is ordinary… or that the brakes are just extra sticky due to surface corrosion from lack of use. Drive it and brake a few times. Then try again to see if it’s just as loud.

Thank you for the insights.

While driving doesn’t seem like I hear the noise.

I didn’t keep my foot on the break, it was just in hold position.

It suddenly started happening, it didn’t happen before as i have had kneel mode ON before but never heard such loud banging noise.

I do drive it almost daily so it is out of question that the breaks would be sticky on the disk. I do end up hitting breaks once in a while during drive as people drive crazy around.

Even in a slow roll you wouldn't hear it, because it's flighting fewer opposing forces. The brakes are not engaged. And friction between pavement and tires are rolling, not static.

"HOLD" is braking. Whether the parking brake in the calipers or the usual braking pistons. I forget which the Rivian uses for hold. It does not require you to actually press the brake pedal. It's done automatically. Same with regen + brake blending.

Thats a good point. I will
Compare between Neutral and Hold position to see if noise happens or not.

Have opened ticket, lets see what they come back with.
