Makes sense, high elevation makes the power drop due to thin air.

Did you have that Genmax 6000iED grounded in any special way or just plug and play?

Generator update!

Ok, I did further research and got some feedback from Rivian (finally) on some of the limitations and basic needs of the mobile charger.
The truck does need a clean sign wave from an inverter. So, a clean wave and a true 240v socket is a must for the mobile charger to work in with the 1450 NEMA. It does NOT have to be a 50amp circuit (even though Rivian wants that) a 30amp circuit will do fine. Also, I could not find an inverter made with a true dedicated 50amp circuit; they don't exist.

I recently purchased a Champion 8500 watt inverter ( 7kw running) which is properly grounded to the frame. The 1450 NEMA mentioned by @miasm works well and I was able to charge my R1T at 28amps on the 240v mobile charger. It gave me 12-13 miles per hour rate of charge.

Also, the Champion 8500 is built to compete with the Honda 7000Ie. I will say (so far) the Champion has 1500 more peak watts and 500 more running watts than the Honda and....it is just as quiet!! I have run both the Honda and the Champion and the Champion is as quiet with more power. AND.... it is 2400 bucks (I got mine for 1400 on Black Friday), made in the USA and warranted for 3 years with great Customer support. I recommend it....unless you want to blow 6 grand on a Honda

Anyone know if a Generac whole house generator produces the required Rivian sine wave output?

Has anyone collected enough data to have a "miles per gallon" figure?

I have an older Honda EU6500is, and will give it a shot once the truck is depleted

Math I did based on the published specifications put the Predator 9500 at 11mpg after all the conversions. My Onan 3.6kw LPG in my trailer would work out to 7.4mpg if I let it burn through a full tank.

My $300 Pulsar 2300 will charge the Rivian at 120v/12amps or 1.44kw. Very slow level one charging but given enough time and gas it would work. I had to make a neutral ground bonding plug since the generator has a floating ground like most portables. Without it the portable charger detects the floating ground and won’t charge.

Any update? My friends have an EU4500s and I’m curious if the EVSE can accept the power from these older inverter generators.

The Onan 3.6kw propane generator in my travel trailer will charge the R1T at 120v/12amps.
This is what I was looking for, I assume you are charging post RV inverter? I’ve got the Onan QG2800i LP on mine, it has a direct outlet at the genset as well as everything else post inverter.

Yep, plugged into the outlet on the side of the trailer.

I can confirm that it will charge, but does require a neutral/ground bonding. 16A was the highest I could get stable, but that's more about the health of my poor old generator

With hunting season coming up, and many of us going out long distance and/or staying there for a week or two (hello vampire drain keep me up at night worry), knowing ways to add charge in a pinch is getting to be important for some of us.

My 6kW Genmax (GM6000iED) works as long as I don't try to go over 20A. 22A and it starts surging and eventually dies. Haven't tried it on propane yet (dual fuel), figure I might have to drop it down in amperage a touch. On the generator, it says that neutral is bonded to the frame (ground), which is important for some chargers. I'm not sure if that's typical of inverter generators, or just how this one was implemented.

240V, so charging at 5kW, 7.5 miles per hour.

Anyone else?

Any update on this setup? I have been trying to find a good 240v generator but most are too heavy. this one seems like it may be perfect for my camping needs. Just wanting to make sure it is still working well for you?
Thank you

Yea, the Genmax works fine. Still big and heavy. I do have to throttle down the charge rate for whatever it can handle (I’m at high altitude). Used it here or there over the last year plus and has been fine.

no need for special ground plugs or anything.
