For. Sure.
Also, ignore anybody that tells you to run home assistant on a raspberry pi and an SD card. That SD card is going to fail when you need it most, guaranteed. SSDs on raspberry pi 4S are okay, but the NUC and the official color platforms are the way to go.
I recently moved from a small Xeon/32Gb RAM over to a RPi5/8Gb with NVME -no longer do any video transcoding etc on the same node - but its been great for our setup which is fairly large by most HA standards.

Great write up btw @fxstein - though you know this is all just a gateway drug into starting to put it all into influx and getting Grafana dashboards running - things that really should stay at work.

Having a dedicated NUC seems like overkill. Just run in a Docker container on your home lab server or NAS.
Another good option if you already have a mission critical appliance like a Synology running 24/7. But I always had weird issues with USB passthrough.

Windows? Hard pass.

Oh, and it's not overkill. It's just getting the job done with minimal stress on the hardware. You know. Like 2% processor load max.....

Yes I had one of the stronger synologys for a while. Definitely strong enough but always some weird side effects with its docker versions and lack of addon support.
that makes upgrades more difficult, reboot sequencing an issues and you cannot take a full easy backup of the entire HA system and install on a different device.
NUC is perfect for my heavy use case. Uses less than 15W most of the time but I get it up to 15% CPU easy with all the data and history in MariaDB.

I agree with most of what you said. All except the backup and migration part...

With Docker, all you have to do is copy the config folder, and the Docker Compose, and you're done. Migration is over.

Feels like we're in /r/homelab...

Home Assistant enhanced its backup/restore process, now you can perform backups via UI. If you're using docker, it's another alternative besides backing up the /config mount point.

This is bad ass! Well done @fxstein. I followed your steps and everything worked perfectly. I'm just experimenting right now on Docker Desktop on Mac before I jump to a NUC or something. Seeing all my Rivian data points makes me happy.. Thank you and keep up the great work.
