Is it possible that the automatic control is trying too hard to keep the cabin temp in an unreasonably narrow band and then just oscillates between heating and cooling whenever it overshoots?

Setting an acceptable range would be nice. Have the heat kick on if the cabin temp drops below XX degrees and having the AC kick on if the cabin temp exceeds YY degrees.

Separately, on auto, the fan always seems to blow harder than I'd like.
Yeah exactly but still that would be a separate mode IMO. Not too different than my home smart thermostat. I have three settings Heat, AC or both and in the both setting there is a gap between heating and cooling settings.

Glad someone else posted this. Thing is so dang confusing. Why they make hvac hard to use is maddening.

FTFY. I’ve said this before, I often wonder if the developers have ever used any of these features while driving an automobile. Or maybe they’re not old enough yet.

I have the same exact problem and have been waiting nearly a month to get a service date. I have stopped using the auto function and only use manual.
This is how all our trucks are operating at the moment. Service can't do anything to fix it until they roll a software update to fix. It needs to just have another dedicated button for heat added and get rid of auto changeover as it doesn't work whatsoever.

I also resolved to keep mine in “manual”, which I think is really just a different kind of auto… still baffling to me.

I've had my R1T for about 7 weeks now and am very happy with it overall, but I am having the same HVAC issues as others are reporting here. The visual displays and response pattern of heating cooling just make no sense. Like others, I am usually leaving the system off and just using heated seats if cold (at least we don't have to worry about carbon monoxide coming in the cabin from an engine!). If I really want heated air, I just turn it up considerably until the heat finally kicks on, but as others have said, it can be 40 out and the heat won't come on at 68, has to be in the 70s. And the reverse has happened on warm days, the temp has to be turned way down to get the AC to kick on. Very perplexing, including the visual indicators of red and blue. Hope they can improve it!

Yeah, as more people check in with these types of odd functionality reports, it seems like some of the programming was "It would be cool to program it like this! Hold my beer!"

Yeah I'm confounded by this as well. It would be nice to have a heat AND AC button, instead of one tile that controls both. The vent icons seem totally arbitrary and don't match the temperature of the air coming out of the vents. I want to put a ticket in for this but it's probably just a limitation of the system. Hopefully it can be tweaked in a software update.
I think in an EV the single button makes sense - you're either spending power on cabin conditioning or you're not. In a gas powered car you're only engaging extra systems/energy to use AC and that's why they have the button but not one for heat.

That said it should show what it's doing accurately and maybe be a little smarter about not turning on (or saying it's turning on) AC when it's 70F in the cabin, 20F outside, and you turn it down to 65.

If running on auto or manual, mine will stay warm until I turn off the back vents to conserve energy. Once I turn off the back, my front vents blow cold air even when it's set to HI and 10deg outside. Once i turn back vents on, hot air comes out the vents again.

Most modern cars have a dedicated AC on/off button because sometimes you want heat+dehumidification. Or sometimes you just want ambient air.

I do wonder how much or little Rivian's attempt to manage humidity well are involved in the issues described in this thread.

From the notes of 2022.47: "Improved automatic humidity control to help keep the cabin more comfortable."

Maybe it’s like my kona and as soon as defrost is selected it turns on both ac and heat? If I don’t have defrost on it will do one or the other. But with defrost on it selects both which I then turn off the ac.

I will never understand why auto makers moved away from the knob that adjusted the temperature of the air to a stupid degree value.

My last 2 cars (pirus c and ram) suffered from this. You could either have it set to 65 and the air was roughly the temperature of the surface of the sun, or set to low and have frigid air blowing. Many times in the winter I'd have to drive with the windows down and the heat on to prevent the inside windows from frosting over.

Drop the digits and go back to analog, there was no problem to fix and it just makes everything worse.

Always seems like the new temperature controls were designed for southern California.

User Interface:
I find the user interface for the HVAC a bit confusing and counterintuitive at times. See the two images below. In the first, I show that the interior temp was set to 71 degrees and the vents show red heating lines. In the other, I show the interior temp set to 70 degrees and the vents switch to snowflakes. It was 41 degrees outside and it definitely was not running the AC. Are these displays just based on the temperature setting? Would seem more intuitive to me if they were based on what the HVAC system is actually doing at that point.

Efficiency:
We had mild weather for a few weeks here (until about a week ago) and I ran for a week with the HVAC on auto even though zero conditioning other than vent was necessary. The AC seemed to run unnecessarily and I averaged 1.9-2.0 miles/kWh, about the same as hotter times when the AC was needed. Then for a couple weeks, I ran with just the vent and forced the AC/heat to be off and saw my average efficiency go up to 2.1-2.3 miles/kWh. Sort of makes me wonder if the AC compressor is working a lot harder than it needs to.

I've also had the same issues, wish they would optimized the interface a little more.
