I plan to keep my 2023 R1S for as long as it keeps going without becoming a money pit. I may gift it to a kid and get something smaller is the only other consideration but that’s several years off.

By keeping our R1S first gen in our garage out of the midwestern elements, we plan to keep it and replace the battery down the road. I’ll be fascinated to see how long everything lasts, given my babying of its interior and exterior.

I am curious if battery replacement will be under $100/kwh..if i could replace a battery at 200k miles for under $14k i would sign up. But i think Rivian will be more interested in selling me a gen7 r1s at that point..

Sold mine at the end of last year. It was a great vehicle but it wasn’t meeting the demands of my life with two kids under the age of 4. Moved to an AWD Sienna and couldn’t be happier. Building it out to be more ‘adventure’ focused like this one below:

I’ll say the tough part about this is this van is so much smoother and comfortable as a driver. I miss the instant torque but everything else has been a welcomed switch. Maybe I’ll be back in a Rivian at some point in the future. 🤙

Curious what about it wasn’t meeting the need. We have two kids (one and five). The R1S has been more than sufficient, especially hauling a full Christmas gift load + luggage, kids, stroller, an 80lb dog, dog stuff, and two adults.

Even with dual car seats, I was out with the boys on Friday late and my buddy used the middle seat second row. He’s a big dude and had no trouble getting in or situated between car seats.

I will say the only downside I’ve encountered is that the third row seats suck. Zero cushion. So uncomfortable. I sat back there and made it an hour on a roadtrip as a 5’10 180lb adult before I swore off ever sitting back there again.

At least in something like a Defender 130 or an LX, the third row seats feel as good as second or first row.

Haven’t been in a minivan in a good 30 years but I imagine the comfort level in the back is probably really high. Could see how that would be superior for kids as they move around in the vehicle.

Sliding doors, second row captains chairs and a full size third row to fit myself with two other adults. I’m 6’3” with long legs even. The sliding second row is phenomenal, along with the storage and ease of use getting in/out. Cupholders, I forgot about those. So many. 😅 The kids have a ball of a time finding out all the ways to open their door. Rear electric motor so no transfer case and up to 650 to 700 miles of range.

It just made sense for us. We’ve had a few family members over and it was a pain having to get into the third row with both car seats strapped in. Ended up moving one to the back so sliding the seat was more efficient in the R1S.

Owned a few Toyotas previously and had nothing but incredible experiences with them so have a bit of brand loyalty. The Sienna being one of two AWD options and the only AWD as a hybrid, that sold itself. 35mpg city/highway as well.

The welcomed room in the driver seat and how everything is laid out with a HUD is something that I’ve grown to enjoy. I’ll keep (whispers CarPlay) out of this as I never saw it as a detractor for the Rivian experience. With no plans of towing anything beyond the Sienna’s capabilities, it fit our lifestyle and plans for our adventures with the kiddos.

My last car was 15 year. Our Model X is over 8 years now and still works great. I hope to have the R1T at least 10.

Agree. I wished the R1S had a sliding 2nd row doors. I know its a minivan thing but if it retained the current form with sliders, that would be fantastic.

I read that minivans are making a comeback and has outsold coupe style CUVs last year.

I agree - Rivian is very unlikely to be selling replacement packs. However, I bet you could pick up a almost new pack from a salvage yard for a good price. You would need a shop experienced with battery replacements, but maybe by then there will be a bunch of them when you want to do it.

Had R1S for a year and can't imagine suffering with it beyond warranty.

Currently waiting for new side mirror due to faulty camera, no adaptive headlights or front sensors currently, alignment problems, faulty air suspension replacement, new half shafts, new center console due to stitch tearing, blown fuse. Junk premium audio, rattles, endless cabin booming from expensive trash scorpion 22"s, won't turn on. Didn't ship w alignment. Just why.

Until I have an issue where the inconvenience outweighs my love of the vehicle. But as the local SC gets me a rental car every time I come in for anything, it could be a long while.

I absolutely love my Gen 1 R1T. We have 68k miles on it. We're also planning on getting an R2 - it is more suited to our use case. Urban driving mostly.

I'd love to keep the truck too, but have concerns mostly around the air suspension.Does anyone share those concerns or any others that would affect longevity?

We have a 2023 Gen1 RS and love it. Only 15,000+ miles. We'll keep it indefinitely. Whatever maintenance/repair costs happen will be small compared to buying a new R1S. However, we likely will add an R2 since my wife wants to drive something smaller.
