Am looking to mount an iPad on the front passenger side dash area as part of an upcoming adventure. Not looking to glue or drill and thought I would reach out here to see if anyone had modified one of the many phone mounts I see for this purpose.

The phone mounts would put incredible leverage on the mount point with an iPad. Also, to just watch, or does it need to be close enough to use actively?

I think you should look at solutions that employ a suction cup from the windshield. Ugly, but it's just for the trip right? No mods, no danger, cheap and easy.

I would consider the effect on the airbag and passenger if involved in a crash. It could result in injuries. I am working on a solution right now for my wife's iPad, simple and easy to put in place and remove. You can contact me, also I will post it after I make it next week.

Thank you guys for your responses. In answer to the questions:

1. I am planning on taking the truck storm chasing next month in the plains so am needing a mount where I can watch radar on the iPad as I travel. I will have a chase partner so we can have one driver who is not distracted. Wanted the extra mount for this as during the chase we will have to coordinate where we think the storm is going to really take off at the same time as working to navigate roads and chargers. So with the main screen occupied with chargers and roads (as well as phones and actual physical road book) I wanted a dedicated screen for radar and the iPad apps work the best for that.

2. Yeah, it might be in the way of the airbags a little bit. Something I have really thought about because the largest danger in storm chasing IS THE DRIVING and either being too tired or distracted and other drivers who are around you also either distracted by the storm or anxious and trying to get out from under it really fast. There will be other mounted items in the cab (GoPro camera for instance) but the iPad is the only one that would really be in the way of the airbag and also large enough to worry about greatly.

3. Am looking at a suction cup mounting that might be able to attach to the roof glass and have the iPad along the headliner to remove it from the path of the airbag will still allowing the passenger to see it easily and use it. Not sure how that will work in real life until I try it so will keep you posted.

4. Thank you to Mobilchuckje and JM,, I do have that attachment and some brackets on order to see how those work as well. Also am concerned about the torque on the attachment points with an iPad mounted on there.

I haven't seen anyone else on here do any storm chasing in their Rivian so if you are out there, please hit me up with your tips, trucks and experiences! I am most concerned about charging infrastructure and being able to keep a good range on the vehicle so as to keep up with the storm and also have some reserve if there are power outages as I go.

I've done a lot of mounts in a lot of cars for a lot of things, and no way would I hang an iPad on that mount above unless it had a third point of support. Meaning that the lower part is at least just pressed away from the dash, so there's no cantilever pressure.

You mean this one?

I am worried about the torque the one in the link above as well. And I do NOT have a ton of experience with this sort of thing so am totally open to all the suggestions from those who do have experience.

Yeah, that one, or the many like it. The twisting pressure on that small slot will be immense on every bump. I'm not sure what the better solution is for a really solid mount. For temp usage I would really be looking at the suction cups. Ugly but effective. Don't rule out a side window mount also, unless you need that window to be opened. I assume in storm chasing you want to keep the storm on the outside, lol.

The truck is my one and only vehicle so the vast majority of the mounts would be best if they are removable. I DO think the suction cup mount is how I am going to go for this and am just awaiting a part to try out the "from the roof glass" mount that may be able to put the iPad along the headliner.

Have looked at a few versions of holders which just do not look like they will support the weight. have purchased a double suction cup that I think may work and will tyr to give a shot this weekend and give feedback.
