I need to thank you for this tip. Over the past couple years I have tried to pair multiple vehicles to my Genie opener and could never get them to "Learn" properly. I was hoping with the new update this week I would have a better experience, but when it still didn't work I decided to see if anyone else had a similar experience.
Thankfully I found your post, and the first time trying to set it up with the door closed, it worked perfectly.

Has anyone had luck with a Linear? Cannot get my linear to program. R1S pairs to the remote, but then fails to connect to the garage door. I have tried the 3 step process of learn and drinking beer, but apart from getting drunk and losing the setting of my manual remote, the R1S won't connect. Thx in advance.

Has anyone found a difference between gen1 and gen2 R1’s? I was able to program our gen1 (and loaner) super easy with our genie remote, but have tried 20+ times with our gen2 only getting ‘this step timed out’.

Our G1 & G2 paired easily with Liftmaster also.
If you can’t pair with a specific brand, a workaround that worked great for us is to add a Liftmaster wireless receiver, then pair to it.
Our office gate has a commercial opener that will not pair with any vehicles at all. I used a liftmaster 412HM - installed it within the gate operator box and it picks up signals fine.
We also have an older garage door opener that I added a Liftmaster 365LM (that opener wouldn’t pair with any newer cars we had, including Rivian).

Got it resolved. Went to Home Depot and picked up a 950EV remote - and it paired on the 1st try with our gen2. Weird that the Genie GU4TG wouldn’t pair with gen2 for us, but no issues with gen1.
