First time helping a stuck driver

Hummer H2, a GM parts bin car. Comprises of a modified GMT829 truck platform, parts from the front of the 3/4 -ton 2500 series trucks and rear of the 1/2-ton 1500 series trucks. 13 MPG at best and a sales failure. GM had agreement to sell the brand to one of the Chinese companies but the deal eventually fell apart.

Commercialized version of military Humvee. Glad GM decided to re-start the Hummer badge as an EV. Almost bought the Hummer EV but salesman knew less about the vehicle than I did. I traded my 08 H2 (bought in 2010) for my '26 R1S. Had that truck for almost 15yrs. Except for the cost to fuel up, I loved every minute of driving it.

By all means get a kinetic rope or strap. Much better for getting unstuck.

The Rivian branded kit is generic stuff at 2.5x what it should cost. But yeah, if you go off road or in snow, have one.

Well done! And a round of applause for declining payment. If you drive enough in snow country, there’s a good chance you will need the same favor yourself some day. Same goes for ICE vehicles that need a jump start. While you can’t do a jump start with a Rivian, carrying a jump kit can go a long way towards good karma.

Static rope is for steady pulling.
Need a kinetic rope/strap to get some running start and yank using momentum.

Today, I took the risk of helping a Hummer get out of a snow mound. I helped since I saw them avoiding rear ending another car that suddenly stopped. traffic was barely going 15 mph.

Since I was behind him I gave them some time and space to try to reverse out, but he could not. When I asked him if he wanted me to help, he said he did not want to damage my pickup with the weight of his hummer. I told him, I had not done this, but was confident I could handle the weight of his truck.

it took a few tries, since he had dug his front wheels, but I got him out. He wanted to pay me. I said, no worries I needed to try sooner or later. Haha

It was only an h3. This is a pic after I helped him. He was almost on the service pole to the right.

That’s cool. I watched a video on YouTube where a guy borrowed a friends Quad and just pulled people out of the snow all day. It looked fun. I’m glad you and your Rivian served those in need.

With ICE you should never pull in reverse. I wonder if the same is true in EVs. Seems plausible.

Why? The gears in the diffs in particular, but also the trans, are cut in a way that is stronger going forward, and weaker with more stress in reverse. This probably applies to EV gearboxes, but maybe not. The reverse gear in ICE transmissions is also weaker, which doesn't apply to EVs.

Wow, I thought that was common knowledge. Direct drive is so rare as to be non existent really.

EVs have a gearbox, but they do not have a transmission. A transmission is a gearbox can have multiple ratios to the input/output. As @SwampNut said, while EVs don't have direct drive where the end device spins at the same RPM as the engine crankshaft, there is a gearbox to reduce the ~20,000 RPM of the electric motor down to a reasonable RPM for the tires.

Possibly the only modern vehicle that doesn't even have a gearbox would be light aircraft with piston aircraft engines (Cessna 172, Cirrus SR22, Beechcraft Bonanza, etc...). These run at ~2,500 RPM and have the propeller bolted directly to the crankshaft. When automotive engines are put on aircraft (a LS1 engine is a "common" powerplant in the homebuilt aircraft world), that gets a gearbox to reduce the ~5,000 RPM of the engine down to ~2,500 at the propeller. In aircraft you generally want to limit the RPMs on the propeller to avoid the tips of the propeller blade traveling at supersonic speeds.
