I’ve only had my R1T for a month and am still in the process of figuring out what the real range gets me.

Today I did a round trip interstate drive and my overall range seemed quite bad. I’ll concede that it was cold: 30F on the way there and 20F on the way home with some wind but I didn’t feel it.

config: DPM, 22” sport, all purpose mode with low suspension, 75-80mph tops

Miles: 312
Avg mph: 60
Mi/kWh: 1.76
kWh: 178

on the way home I charged with Electrify America at a Buccee’s and left with 290 range showing. 136 mile trip home. All interstate. Returned with 75 miles

290 - 136= 154 - 75 = 79 miles of loss from estimated range.

Is this explained mostly by the cold temps?

You got 1.76 mpkwh at -30 temps and you’re complaining? My R1T has 2.20 lifetime mpkwh so I’d actually say you did quite well….batteries don’t like cold temps…

Sounds about right.
Cold temps and interstate speeds.
I’ve had my R1S, 22” for just over a year, 20,000 miles in CO mtns. Mostly interstate miles 75-80 mph
Expect 1.75 Mi/kwh in winter and 2.25 in summer.

Not negative, that was a hyphen. It was 20-30F the entire trip. Didn’t have a good feel for wind though

Sounds normal unfortunately. Cold temps, high speeds, and wind are the trifecta for an efficiency disaster.

I have a cold weather road trip video coming soon. I did very well but that's mainly because I used the new schedule departure feature to get the battery nice and toasty before I set out.

Higher cold weather efficiency requires preheating the battery (only makes sense for road trips because it doesn't save energy only time on road trips). Also, running the cabin heater takes a lot of energy. You can turn that off and use heated seats/wheel if you find that reasonable. Lastly, keep speeds at 70 or better 65 and you will see a very significant gain in efficiency.

Does not have to be windy the air is much more dense when cold as well.

He isn't complaining, he's looking for information if his results were normal. He said he had only had the Rivian for about a month, heck, the thread is title says its his first road trip.

Cold definitely plays a factor, but 75-80mph, while not terribly fast, will absolutely eat into your efficiency especially if there’s a headwind.

Sounds like a good stretch was freeway, Conserve would have helped.
No conserve on dual motor.

Pretty normal given the temp and speed. You’ll do better when the temps warm up. I’m intrigued: which Buc-ee’s has an EA charger station? I’ve only seen Tesla SC at them.

when I arrived there was one other Rivian. When I left there were two Hyundai.

It was the easiest charging other than Rivian AN I’ve used. Every single time I use EVGo I have to call customer service and have them manually start it. Wastes 6-8 minutes. Their customer service is fast to pick up and good at least.

Yeap. temperature, wind, and driving above 75 all are battery killer. Took my model 3 LR yesterday on a 95 miles trip in 15 to 20 degree weather with 20 mph wind. Started at 333 miles full charge. Get at destination at 170 remaining.
I took the rivian on the same trip two months ago started out full(338) driving conserve. Arrived with 233 remains. Weather was in the 40s with 10 mph wind.
Both trips are mostly highway and average around 75 mph.

Nice truck! I just did my first road trip. I agree with what others have said-speed, pre-conditioning and the cold all have impact. The local highway speed limits are 75-85 so it's hard to go 65-70 on these, unless you want to get run over (jk). I just drive like I would normally. Cheers.
