I'm a huge Ferrari fan. This is not Ferrari. It's an abomination.

Ok, so in terms of styling, the Luce looks nothing like the F40, the 250 GTO, the Enzo and certainly not the Testarosa.

And I'll agree that the looks don't send me swooning. But if you're familiar with less iconic Ferrari models, the Luce isn't far from:
their Purosangue SUV - yes, Ferrari couldn't ignore that market,
Rivian R1T R1S Ferrari Luce????? ferrari_hero_91422_1280

or the Amalfi,

And, I think if you painted the Luce a deep glossy black or stark white, it would look better.

The Purosangue looks incredible in person. Even Andreas Preuninger (head of Porsche GT program) said it was one of the most incredible cars to drive, and one of his favorite on sale today. It also has a NA V12 with 715hp. That is really rare today.

The Luce has none of this. It may have been fine from an EV startup, or a Chinese EV brand, but it doesn't look good, the EV specs are just okay, and the interior is terrible (other than the steering wheel). There might be a few people that think it looks okay, but not Ferrari customers. The starting price is $640,000. It needs to look like a $640,000 car and have the specs to back it up. It fails at all levels. The only reason Ferrari buyers will buy this, is to get access to special edition super cars.

Ferrari used to work with Pininfarina on cars designs for many years. Here is the EV super car they developed, the Battista. This is what Ferrari should have built.

Marques got up close with the Luce. Not obvious from the pics but that entire front stretch of blue is a spoiler and the back a diffuser. Some very clever interior controls.

From that article:
Ferrari’s sound system doesn’t pipe in fake V12 noise from a speaker library. A precision accelerometer mounted at the center of the rear axle picks up the actual vibration of the rotating motors. That signal is filtered, equalized, and amplified — basically the same principle as an electric guitar amp. The driver gets continuous, harmonically rich feedback that tracks what the powertrain is actually doing, in real time. It’s optional, which is the right call, but I’d argue it’s no more “fake” than the sound of a Stratocaster through a Marshall stack.
As you pointed out, the Ferrari doesn't require the noise to be functionally effective, a Strat requires an amp to complete the "electric guitar" function.

So for that reason alone, *I* would would characterize it as fake. Almost a perfect expression of form over function. And who would have guessed Johnny was there? He probably put the charging connection under the car so as to keep a smooth un-interrupted curve!

Ferrari's EV was a perfect time to re-define the driving experience from their perceived position as a leader. There is no reason at all that the new experience has to include any sort of emulation.

Certainly no challenge to Pininfarina et al. And yes, all the great designers created a few stinkers.

All in all - Apple meets TRON.

Should have OEMed the Rimac Nevera ($2M hypercar) and priced (reduced) for the poorer Ferrari clientele

So, wading into this pot and kettle styling discussion, I'll offer some subjective observations. I was never a big fan of many of Ferrari's designs because a lot of them seemed too ostentatious, wildly screaming for attention, and even a little clunky (take the iconic Enzo, the Testarosa, etc.)

Now, to my eye, the discontinued Roma or the current 296 GTB seems much more fluid and pleasing to look at. I prefer elegant aerodynamics and subtle, ingenious form-follows-function details over ridiculously large air intakes, flashy wings or flamboyant side mirrors which, TBH, I would be embarrassed to be seen driving, (not that that would likely ever happen IRL ;)). YMMV.

In that light, the Luce isn't all that bad stylistically, even if it lacks a distinct defining design hook -- which may be damning, I'll concede. But I would still prefer being seen driving it to the local Kroger's over the F40 -- blasphemy, I know.

Now, to twist the metaphorical knife, do you really think Rivian's design language is particularly distinctive, outside of the ridiculously comical headlights? While the R1T does some nice execution on the traditional pick-up truck, it's still a mild iteration of a very generic shape. I mean, heck, any Chevy pick-up from the 1950s has loads more distinctive styling.

And it would be hard to imagine a more generic looking SUV than the R1S or R2. And yes, the R3 looks like an amalgamation of just about every 70s-80s hatchback, only on purpose, but with even cuter headlights, and no, that is not a plus in my design ledger. (Did you pick up on my still not being a fan of the "stadium/carabiner" idiom?)

So sling your arrows, but don't forget to consider the platform from which you shoot.

Its additional evidence that the reality I knew died.

About a decade ago I debated about whether to get a used Ferrari or a brand new Tesla Model S. Had I known reality itself was going to implode I may have gotten the Ferrari.

To enjoy the last bit of Italian excitement before the Apple Car.

This is the future Jeremy Clarkson envisioned.

EV specs are just okay???
  • Four bespoke permanent magnet synchronous motors derived from the F80 hypercar, one per wheel.
  • 1,050 hp combined — front motors put down 210 kW combined and spin at 30,000 rpm, rear motors put down 620 kW combined at 25,500 rpm.
  • 2.5 seconds 0-100 km/h, 6.8 seconds 0-200 km/h, 310 km/h top speed, with 730 lb-ft of torque.
  • 122 kWh battery built in Maranello using 210 cells co-developed with SK On, structurally integrated into the chassis and designed to be replaceable so owners can upgrade as battery tech improves.
  • 800V architecture, 350 kW DC fast charging, 530 km WLTP range.
  • A brand-new Vehicle Control Unit that updates actuation targets 200 times per second through Side Slip Control X, managing all four motors independently.
  • Independent torque vectoring at every wheel.
  • Active suspension derived from the F80, with spool-valve dampers — no anti-roll bars.
  • Independent rear-wheel steering.
  • Center of gravity 95 mm lower than the Purosangue, yaw moment of inertia 15% lower, giving the Luce dynamic behavior equivalent to a car 400 kg lighter than its actual 2,260 kg weight.

so people in a INEOS FN group were making fun of it; mostly for being an EV. The Count was more concerned about mocking it for looking like a Datsun.

Looks like a car straight out of the movie TRON! I don't love it but I really don't hate it and that's my issue. I'm neutral...it does nothing to excite me. I think Ferrari missed a wonderful opportunity to blend old lines with new technology. It could have worked, but it looks like something Nissan would design and that's an issue. As is the crazy price tag...especially knowing it's a microwave on wheels.
