When you get your A2Z typhoon adapter, it can be finicky to use. The tesla portion on the adapter can be very snug. It needs to be fully inserted in order for the close latch can engage. If its not fully seated, no charge. The ccs1 portion inserts nicely into your vehicle.

My best piece of advice, is take your Rivian on a roadtrip (after some planning and local practice at a fast charger).
That is great advice. Our R1T is our 2nd EV that we owned (Volvo XC40...aka "Piece of Crap") was our first, so I had experience with public charging. But, before we took a road trip from NorCal to SoCal, I went to a local EA to "test". I wanted to make sure that my EA account was working and that the R1T recognized the charger....it did. The charging station itself SUCKED and the reviews reflected that, but that wasn't the purpose of my testing, it was about testing the connection and that worked perfectly fine so I knew we were going to be fine. On our trip we used 2 EA stations and 2 EVGo's.....both flawless!

I purchased the Lectron J1772 adapter to use at open Tesla stations as I think it’s going to be awhile before I receive the Rivian one. I went to what was described as an “open” station on the Tesla sight, but doesn’t come up on the Rivian nav map with the “adapter needed” filter selected. When I tried to charge (attempted on two different stations) it said “waiting on charger” on the screen. I called support and they were not very helpful. He said maybe try opening an account through Tesla.

I was going to go to a Tesla station that does come up on the Rivian app with the ”adapter needed” filter on, however, the Riv representative said that if you make three failed attempts to charge you have to reboot the car. Didn’t want to deal with that so I came home and plugged in again to reset.

To be fair, even though I’ve owned the Riv for over a year, this was my first attempt to try a public charger so certainly could be some operator error.

Are there chargers listed as open on the Tesla sight, but not really open to Rivian?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
What I would do is get the PLUG-SHARE app for either your Android, iPhone or use the web to research stations that you will use regularly or on a road trip.
Before we took a 600+ mile road trip, I studied the stations we might use on the way. I was like a teenager cramming for an exam. I had contingency plans for my contingency plan. I read reviews that were recent to see what others were experiencing. All brands of vehicles were leaving reviews so I got a plethora of data to confidently know which stations were worth it. In the end, we had ZERO problem charging.

At least you didn't nuke your car or the charger. It sounds like after a few tried this with J1772 adapters, Rivian updated their language around 3rd party adapters.

In reality, EV use needs to be simplified regarding charging. I spent the entire weekend with my FIL explaining it to him when he got his Rivian. It needs to be simplified for mass expansion.

The only public charging I've done in the 5-6 weeks since I got my Rivian has been at some free L2 Volta ones at the building next door to my office. Those were simple: just plug in and walk away.

Excluding the Tesla supers and the NACS adapter many of us don't have yet, if one were to start thinking about long road trips, which third party apps might they need to install and set up accounts on and what other adapters might they need?

RIV or Rivian code should give you a discount. I have it and it works flawlessly.

Regarding apps, Plugshare is number 1, then maybe ABRP. Unfortunately you need a lot of apps to charge these days, which needs to change. I still can't get my EA app to work, but I was able to charge at EA sites just using a CC at the charger.

so for all of these, you need their app, an account profile set up, credit card saved, etc.?

ChargePoint and Tesla are plug and play within the Rivian app. Just make sure you have a form of payment in your Rivian app.

What is the price per kW for Tesla using the Rivian app versus having the Tesla app and membership?

The membership gets you about 20% discount. You break even on the $12.99/mo. subscription after about 100-150 kWh. Tesla charges about 11¢ more for non-Tesla vs Tesla.

Without membership, the cost is on par with EA with their Pass+. From what I can see, Orange County CA, Tesla is couple cents more during peak and about 4¢ less during off-peak.

You need a level 3 charging adapter (1000 volt / 500 amps) instead of the level 2 charging adapter (60 amps) you currently have.

The only one I would recommend that is shipping out and has been reliable for Ford / Rivian customers is the A2Z adapter.

You can get it $177 shipped after the "RIV" discount code has been applied.

A2Z EV Link - NACS (Tesla® Supercharger & NACS 3RD PARTY DC CHARGERS) to CCS1 Adapter | 500A | 1000V

You can always call them after you've placed your order to upgrade to expedited / overnight shipping for $15.

You still have to wait 3 weeks for the order to ship but once it ships, you should get it in couple days.

Just got mine today.....looks solid, can't wait to use it next Saturday on my Drive from Portland to Yakima (Via Bellevue). Does the discount code also work for the Level 2 adaptor? ( I was thinking I might need one for destination chargers)......... ? ?
Thanks.
