For someone who tows a lot or doesn't own a home -- this is your truck.

I just saw that a 600 mile 9 minute charging Samsung pack is going into production in 6 months. That technology pretty much ends the EREV Ford before it's even released.
WOW, a battery that outputs miles. Interesting. Just dumb marketing.

A Lightning is fine, but Ford skipped what Tesla and Rivian have done - built software defined vehicles and changed the buying experience/dealer model. Lower battery costs won’t make an electric Ford competitive without modernizing the rest of the vehicle and experience.
Changing the dealership/buying experience model with the legacy big three is not going to come without a huge fight. I believe the dealerships are one of the significant reasons EV's haven't taken off here in 'Merica....they know the direct sales model and very little maintenance with EV's (compared to ICE) is coming and will do their best to kick that can down the road.

You mean like the day I took my old gas Silverado in for a recall job and the salesman reminded me how much they planned to markup my preordered Silverado RST EV?

I think the whole plan was to add the lost service department income right off the top before it left the building.

Same thing happened to me on my Rivian.

No. wait. I ordered and paid for it on my phone at a preset price.

The press keeps talking about battery vs ICE powertrain, and missing Elon’s and Rivian’s greatest accomplishment - breaking the dealer cartel.

Who else sells a seven passenger SUV with 535 hp, adjustable air suspension, headlights that selectively dim individual LEDs for oncoming traffic, needs almost no maintenance, and that you can buy on your phone without negotiating price or visiting a dealership?

Nah. 95% of the reason my neighbors buy what they buy is because it is what they want.

I guess you are saying they are buying things they don't want because, you know, "big oil". LOL. Nobody cares about big oil. Well, regular people don't anyway.

They just want to get from point A to point B as easily and as stress free as possible. And like it or not, traveling with a BEV is definitely more stressful than traveling with a ICEV. And people know it.

Sales are slowing because all the early adopters have adopted, and normal people are not willing to put up with the stress we are willing to put up with.

That, sir, is why. It isn't "big oil", whatever that is. 🤣
It's true that oil companies are some of the largest companies in the world ("big")

It's also true their operations in the US are STILL subsidized despite their established success over the last 100+ years. Is that the free market?

It's also true they spend hundreds of millions every year lobbying and fighting any effort to regulate carbon emissions or extraction.

Do those people buy ICE trucks with any of that in mind? Most of them probably do not. But it's also true that some of them might make different decisions if the larger picture was more opaque and they could connect those dots to how they affect their lives and the lives of their children in the future.

An EV truck isn't for everyone - I tell that to anyone who asks me about my Rivian. I choose to support innovation instead of the same old bullshit coming from automakers. Because we should be much further along than we are right now....

EREV trucks are the solution literally no one asked for - the worst of both worlds. They will likely be obsolete by the time most of them come to market and yet again those companies will be left with no chair when the music stops.

I think the F150 EREV is 2 years away. We could just build out MW charging with CATL batteries and skip all the junk half measures. That will take a decade or more though.

Agreed. If the auto industry would stop getting distracted by every squirrel that walks by, we could probably be in that place in 5 years, which would be a huge leap forward.

Those who still want their ICE trucks could still buy them at the local dealer who will always steer them towards what's best for them and not what's best for the local dealer and their service department (e.g., what's in stock)

Lower price batteries will be increased competition for ICE vehicles.
All EV makers will have the lower cost batteries once available.

I definitely agree with you about this.

I love my R1T because it is a great truck that does things no truck from the legacy car companies can do. You know what I mean because you have one. But as you said, it doesn't fit everyone's needs.

That's the only reason I bought one, and the reason most people buy a vehicle. It fits what they want and need in their life.

As evidenced by Scout pre-orders, there seems to be a market for EREV trucks. How big the market is we will find out. I don't think anyone really knows.

I have been talking to a lot of people about this. A few who put deposits on the EREV Scout included.

To a one they all said they’re hedging their bet and will decide what to buy when the actual price and specs are out. And it may not be the EREV version.

I personally think EREVs are dumb.

For people who mostly drive very long distances every week the EREV may make sense. But for 99% of people 360 days a year it just doesn’t.

Take the 500 pounds and the cost and the space you’d spend on the small generator and put it into batteries. You get a larger capacity to use day to day (so less frequent charges needed) and as a bonus more kWh in the pack means the ability to stay in the high kW part of the charge curve on the rare occasions when you do a road trip and need to DCFC.

And you avoid needing to maintain the engine and go to the gas station every month. Which you will need to do because the car will need to burn that gas so it doesn’t go bad.
