It’s true that we don’t know anything for sure, but I would hope Rivian would have learned from its mistakes. Like when they tried to charge reservation holders more money overnight after they had locked in lower prices. Luckily they corrected that. But none of us know anything for sure.
RJ has told investors that LiDAR and RAP1 were coming "in late 2026" and meanwhile folks have sort-of-guarantees that they can order the Performance with Launch Package out into February.
So OT1H that implies one could wait long enough to get LP/LE and LiDAR on the same vehicle.
OTOH we all agree that LP/LE is an incentive to buy NAOW and offering later LP/LE buyers the LiDAR equipment could chap some early adopter asses.
But none of us know anything for sure - and I will guarantee that Rivian is trying to negotiate this transition as best they can given 'waves hands at all of this'. In someone's perfect world, the LiDAR and RAP1 testing and BOM would be 100% complete and the first R2 that rolled out for delivery would have included all dat HW.
Since I just leased an EV6 as I thought my R2 invitation would come this time next year, I will be following this closely - I want Autonomy+ and towing, but I also want LiDAR as I'm that guy who typically keeps cars 8+ years.
(Cars since 1993: 1990 Honda Accord purchased from a friend. 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee. 2012 Infiniti M37x.)
It doesn’t sound like they can upgrade an NVidia R2 with no LiDar to one with the RAP1 and LiDar, so they’d better be careful. Dealing with the general population is going to be different than dealing with wealthy early adopters.
