Thanks! Great questions. I made sure to choose a large, lower-rpm type fan that is completely silent. It cools both the switching circuitry and the Android computer, which are two separate PCBs. The Android computer & the fan turn off when the vehicle is locked, then turn back on when the vehicle is unlocked. The switch remains on all the time but draws an infinitesimal amount of power.
Have you tested in extreme heat conditions? Is the HW rated for temps that can get 120+ in a parked vehicle?

Heck, in Texas I've seen cabin temps of over 150 with my Teslas. You are talking spring cabin temps for Dallas. ;)

Great question though.

Still not quite warmed up to the subscription fee. But i *think* you landed on a good place with the price point. Again, I have the Tesla HDMI input adapter that highjacks the backup camera SDI input. That was more expensive than this product.

Can you disclose exactly what your are missing out on with letting the subscription fee lapse, whether it's functionality or QOL improvements?
Right - I feel like if I charged $500 for this with no sub, most would tell me to pound sand. I do have some hard costs to cover, with developers and customer support -- including forum moderation -- being the major buckets. So, those that contribute will directly benefit. Meaning, the sub gets you access to customer support, new features/updates, and access to the EV Play community (aka "ecosystem"). The feature roadmap is extensive; version 10 is going to do a whole lot more than version 1. And that's just what *I* have planned. The Rivian community is going to come up with some amazing stuff, and I need to allocate resources both on the software and hardware fronts.

During this exercise I learned that a lot of people are just here for AA/CP. They could care less about all the bells & whistles coming down the pipe. I can live it that, although I feel like they are going to be really jealous when fully functional custom instrument clusters, internal live cam monitoring, and rear screen movies and gaming happen. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. At any rate...those folks only want AA/CP and so the sub might not make sense. Note that I won't deny them the ability to get those features at a later date. They would just have to purchase those features a la carte and you guessed it...it would have been cheaper to get the sub.

On the other hand, if you want to embark on this crazy journey and unlock some really amazing features in the process, turn some of your use cases in to real features, and get access to the whole library of features others develop, then the sub would make sense. And to your point, is it really going to break the bank at $36 a year!?!

Two variables here: operating temp and storage temp. Max operating temp for the device is 185F. Storage temp is far, far greater. These things get baked in reflow ovens, after all.

I don't care about a very inexpensive subscription in terms of the dollars, but two things:

I'm just so overwhelmingly tired of 15 charges for subscriptions every month.

I really do not care about any of the other stuff besides CP. But updates shouldn't be charged for, and that's a hard line for me. Feature add-ons are a different story, but firmware updates should always be included.

Carplay is only part of it though. A carplay screen would probably be fine for the uber use case i mentioned.

For me, having it integrated into the actual display is the selling point. Because it is seamless. I don't have to add a fourth screen to the truck. I just click a little button when I want to use it (which wont be always) and when I dont want to use it, its basically invisible.

I'm imagining playing games on it while at a charger (if its just normal android) maybe some steam link or something. Watching movies from an SSD or something.

Maybe it's the techy in me, but the potential is pretty awesome an when I'm done, its back to bone stock with no visible additions to the truck.
I really could not have said this better. ;)

Right and then you probably won't hear notifications or anything from the phone.
That is correct.

Sorry for the confusion.

Firmware (bug fixes) = free
Feature Add-ons and feature updates = subscription or a la carte

No, I created the confusion, I know you said firmware updates are free. I was agreeing that's how it has to be, and that you're doing it right. Subscribing for new features is also a perfectly acceptable business model. I was trying to address some of the whining about a subscription, while also saying that I understand it too.

I still want to see more about the remote and the actual installation. I am also already pretty happy with the CarPodGo so am watching to see if it's better/worse/different to move it all to one screen.

Okay. So how does audio from ev play work? How do I switch audio from rivian to ev play? And when using audio from EV play does it play through the rivian speakers?
If you're using something like AA/CP, your phone is connected to the Rivian audio via Bluetooth (paired from the Rivian phone pairing screen). You can switch back and forth between AA/CP and the Rivian UI, but your audio source does not change.

If you want to use a native Android app on EV Play or plug in a Steam Deck using an HDMI to USB adapter, then you would instead pair EV Play to the Rivian audio via Bluetooth.

OKay so the Ev Play device has bluetooth? I presume it has wifi also (required for CP/AA)
That is good to know....so for example, I could connect EV Play to the Rivian audio via bluetooth, but I could also pair it to a headset instead? These are good features to list out...

Ooh yea, let your passengers watch a movie with the headset while you drive and listen to your music over the speakers.

I like that use case....However, I believe that playing video while driving is disabled? I think I read Alex state that somewhere....but my thinking was more around having earbuds connected to the ev play device and get sound through it for the driver (e.g. google map directions or even maybe stream music through the siriusxm app on android/ev play) and rest of the passengers can hear music through rivian audio

That's correct!

EV Play contains a Wi-fi and Bluetooth module used just for AA/CP functionality (both are connected to your phone for wireless AA/CP sync).

EV Play also has secondary Wi-fi and Bluetooth module used for all other tasks, like playing Android video & audio apps, multiplayer gaming, etc. So theoretically yes, you could pair it to a Bluetooth headset and use an Android audio app simultaneously while you're using AA/CP.

Yes, video-in-motion is disabled. And yes, the scenario you outlined is possible, though I'm not sure 100% legal (not that I care, just pointing it out).
