I believe you can mount the "clicker" anywhere you want to - or leave it floating around in a cupholder or the center bin. Entirely up to you. This sounds quite terrible, though I'm definitely prissy about UI/UX since that's part of my job. Maybe if it could be mounted on the screen itself, but still, sounds awful.
Why not use one of the add-on CarPlay units? The only difference with this is leveraging the huge screen, but I don't think that's super helpful for CP. The 9" screens are fine (I use one).
I spent almost $300 on the EVSportline add-on screen with the custom Rivian mount, so $400 doesn't seem to be a lot for this. I would have been quite content if it had been Waze only if that had been easier to implement, so getting full CarPlay will be a treat. I don't need it around town, but on long trips where I've been known to use the speed limit as a "rough" guideline, I really like to know where the police and traffic cams are.
Another note...I was never allowed to install the EVSportline screen in our R1S. My wife would not permit another screen in "her" car (it clearly is - her brother used to be a brand director for Rivian and she ordered it while he worked there). I finally installed it in my 2016 Highlander and have been happily enjoying CarPlay in that vehicle.
