Probably true on some Safelite outlets. But the one that called me was not gonna do it. He said they can’t get the OEM glass from Rivian. I’m glad I waited and got the SC to replace it instead. Hopefully picking it up in a day. They Uber me home now.

At this point why would anyone want OEM glass given their fragility? Outside of calibration, it sounds like it’s worth the gamble to go with any alternative.

Do non-OEM windshields from Safelight have a bad reputation? I’ve had no issues with them in the past, but I have only used them twice in 20 years.

The main criticism I've read about Safelite over the years is they use "cheap", lower quality glass. Given how fragile the Fuyao OEM glass is, it seems like we aren't really gaining anything by going with them again given the crazy price discrepancy. IMO if Safelite replaced my windshield it has a warranty and they would re-calibrate again if necessary.

I don’t mind Safelite either. As long as it’s warranty and calibration is good too. It’s actually convenient if Safelite does it. They’re mobile and will come to you asap.

Just added windshield replacement to my open service center ticket. I've had two small chips on this windshield, both repaired pretty easily with the Rain-x windshield repair kit purchased from Amazon ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IPS4APU/ ). This one's a bit bigger, though, and the lateral ray from the break actually stopped at one of my previous self-repair locations, so I could see this one splitting even further. I'm still going to try a self-repair tonight, but it is probably time for a replacement.

Maybe Rivian is making tougher windshield glass as part of the factory retooling!:rock:

This is my third windshield in this R1S in right at a year, the replacement will be #4. The first two replacements were from bad seals - the first from the factory and the second from the replacement of the first.

I like to tint the inside of the windshield for heat here in the florida sun - I've had great results tinting with 70% tint, which looks almost clear. Many here tint with 50%. Both of those are technically illegal in Florida.

What I would really like to see is some great PPF or ceramic coating for the exterior of the windshield. A friend of mine with a Fisker (insert sob story here) is going with Exoshield since he may never be able to get a replacement windshield. I'm going to look into this too https://www.getexoshield.com/products/windshield-protection-film-gt3

Sorry to OP for thread hijack, just sharing my thoughts after being attacked by a rock about an hour ago!

For what it’s worth m, I have Exoshield- and I caught a rock a few days back and now it’s from wiper to roof crack. If you do go exoshield get the extra $200 insurance for free replacement and replacement of glass up to $1k. Personally I would have been able to repair had I not had the exoshield

I had 6" of heavy, wet snow last week. When it was done covering my truck, I remotely turned on the defrost to maximum to melt some if it before going to clean it off. Came out to find a multi-foot curving crack running from the bottom center of the windshield, below the wipers, up through the middle of the windshield. Seems likely (to me) that this was not due to any impact, but a defect that was triggered by the temperature differential. Disappointing.

Current soonest service appointment is 8 weeks out. Grumpy.

I feel not alone any more after reading this thread. No SC near me so Rivian Certified collision center it was. They wouldn’t order glass until I dropped it off. So we’re on week 4 and they had to ship it to another Collision center across the state to calibrate. Longest windshield replacement process ever.

Just had Rivian do a replacement 2 weeks ago. Neither Safelite nor any of the local shops were able to get a Rivian Windshield. Hope you have better luck. Rivian cost $1,800 including recalibration.

(Fwiw, in my experience Safelite sucks especially when using insurance and you are better off with any local shop and paying out of pocket.)

Agree. Safelight sucks. They scrape the paint around the windshield and cover it up with a matte black paint. No thank you. Rivian or local shop with a good reputation.

So now I've joined the cracked windshield club. Happened using the defrost to melt ice but I had hard a sharp hit a month ago so that was probably the root cause.

My insurance lets Safelite handle their glass. They can't do the recalibration and want me to drive to Boston after they install the glass in Hyannis. I gave a deposit to a Rivian Certified repair center I've dealt with but Safelite won't pay them anything because they aren't a licensed glass installer.

Anyone know what the final cost might be? I told them to go ahead, that I'll cover it, and handed it off to my insurance agent.

I'm joining club. I have six inch crack at top on passenger side. There has been no rocks or anything that hit it and it appears to go all way through. Called SC and they are going to evaluate. They said I should first check with insurance company, which I will do next. This is odd since I am sure nothing hit it and it's garaged.

I stupidly did this yesterday and spread a stable chip to a crack half way up the middle of the glass.

For point of reference, my new windshield tab was just a hair over $2K installed and recalibrated by a Rivian Certified collision center. With so many vehicles now requiring recalibrating, it a wonder Safelite is still in business since they don't to a complete job.

I had a chip repaired by Safelite on my R1S in December. After reading on a different thread that only Rivian could calibrate after replacement, I asked him if they did that. He said it varies from location to location and that, where I live, they can do the calibration.
