Connect+ required for Hotspot?

I thought rivian tracker indicated that we would be able to hot spot to phone in order to get around connect + I can confirm that hotspot is disabled and connect + required to activate.

Nope. No Connect+ is needed for a hotspot connection. I am using a hotspot with the very helpful Automation in the iPhone from @TXR1S and it is working without issue. (Note, so far all the features I use that would come with Connect+ are working great without it - e.g. Spotify, etc.)

I think possibly you are confusing the hotspots. The hotspot generated by the Rivian does require Connect +. To get around that, you connect the wireless connection on the Rivian to the hotspot on your phone. That doesn't require Connect +.

The Rivian hotspot (for connecting up to eight devices) of course requires connect+ sub.

You also don’t get GG live view without connect+.

You can use the hotspot on your mobile device and connect the Rivian to your mobile device via WiFi.

Do note however that most plans have limited mobile hotspot data. For me, I have 5GB included and to upgrade to 50GB would cost me an extra $20 per month.

Also, the upcoming Google cast will require connect+ to function as it requires the Rivian hotspot to function.

One long road trip with the family and my 5GB would be used up in the first hour ?.

I also repeat the hotspot when we are camping so it’s worth it to me for the hotspot alone.

I chose to pay for the Connect+. My wife decided she would see if she could live without it on her R1S.

You're getting it reversed.

It's referring to "using your phone's internet sharing as a hotspot" to get around C+ for streaming media. Not "using the truck's provided WiFi hotspot" - that actually does require C+.

If you want a mobile hotspot for use both in and out of the truck, I would recommend getting one from The Calyx Institute - a nonprofit that promotes electronic privacy, and offers unlimited data hotspots as a perk of donation/membership. ~$42/month when you pay annually, with the "base 5G hotspot" itself costing $100. (A better 5G hotspot for $250, 4G is $33/month.) Disadvantage is that you can't activate for a single month, you have to do either quarterly or annually, and quarterly costs way more. But they are a nonprofit who does good work.

You are confusing the hotspots. Without connect +, you can use your phone as a hotspot to connect your vehicle and use your phone data (to the extent you have it available). With connect +, you can use the vehicle as a hotspot and connect (up to 8) devices to use that connection (rather than your cellular data). They are opposites...

Thanks all. I get it now. Thinking of buying connect + this year just to see if rivian can squeak out a Q4 break even quarter but I doubt they will. Really not liking the precedent this shows. Hey we control the software stack so we control what perks you get through the car and we can take them away and make you pay for them to get em back.

You complain about the hotspot. Once proven wrong, which some searching might have avoided your post, you complain about other invalid issues. IMO you might wanna consider selling your Riv, if you have one.

Haha. I think I said that same thing regarding the apple car play complaint.

Keep in mind basic maps charging locations all require internet connection. They seem to work still.

Im enjoying my Bluetooth connection for now.

Except that they’ve clearly stated their intent with regard to this since day 1….cant help it if the consumers didn’t do due diligence or were wilfully ignorant…

What? Every OEM has subscription based services. Wireless data connection isn’t free with your cellular phone. Neither is it free for car companies. If subscribed annually, monthly cost to you is less than cost of one lunch at a diner.
