I was on a 1200 mi round trip road trip and decided to try some of the non-Tesla stations out there. Used a few RAN, GM Energy and Mercedes Benz stations, no issues. All was going well until a stop at a Buc-ees using MB (in this case a rebranded Chargepoint);

Plugged in and activated with no issue. While in the store I got a notice charging had ended early (was going to 85%, it quit at 60%). Walked out, saw the station was in a restart/reboot and the car saying unplug. I figured "no biggie, I'll unplug and wait for it to reboot or move down to the Tesla banks". Except, the plug wouldn't come out. This wasn't just a jiggle it kind of thing, the plug was firmly stuck in the car (remember they have a safety catch).

I wasnt sure if it was car or station so I tried a reset on the car first, nope. I then called Rivian to see if they could tell or reset anything (they couldn't). Their advice was lift the panel over the fender and use the manual override pull. Cool! Except, first tug on that and the cable popped right off :swear:

Then called 800# on charger to see if they could remote release the plug. Overseas tech support was nice and repeated everything I already tried + they did a remote reset on the unit, still didn't disconnect. She said there was nothing else she could do and would have to escalate the ticket. - At this point I'm thinking I'm either spending the night or renting a car, totally hosed here.

20 min later, US based tech support from Chargepoint called. He said it's likely a bad plug/handle. There is a tiny sticker on top of the handle that if you peel back gives access to a manual release slot. Poked a knife in there and the handle popped right off !! Hallelujah!

Posting this just on the off chance someone else finds themselves in this position and ends up here via a Google search. There were no instructions or way of knowing this at the site or if that support person didn't call me back.

Needless to say, rest of the trip I used Tesla SC's!

I just had a similar experience at a motel with a L2 charger. I plugged in and discovered the release button was completely broken off. To make matters worse the charger did not work. I used my pocketknife and after working at it for a bit I got it to release.

... and all my EV skeptical buddies like to remind me now they've never had a stuck gas nozzle.
Er, I'm coming from a Honda Ridgeline that has a capless fuel-filler that, on occasion, will get a gas nozzle stuck in it.

Gives me little hope should I ever need to do so...

Got any pics of any of it? Specifically that little sticker.

And I like to ask them how many times they've put diesel in their gas cars, or visa versa. I once had a motorcycle buddy put diesel in his Ducati, that thing was belching white smoke for a week!

ETA I totally forgot, my EV skeptic brother in law put gas in his silly lifted F250. That thing was out for weeks and costs thousands of dollars!

That cable release line doesn't require much effort. If you're describing it as a tug, you probably pulled too hard. It's only there to unlock the lock that prevents the cable latch from opening. You still need to unlatch the cable connector.

@TTedP , thanks for the tip. After many years of DCFC charging, this is the first I have heard of a manual release on top of the CCS plug.
Does anyone know if this is a feature on all CCS chargers, or just this one specific brand?

I should've taken a photo but didn't. Here's approximately where it was on the handle. Tiny sticker with Chargepoint label. Peel it back and there is a silver lever 1/2" or so in there. In hindsight, the action on the plastic lever was weak - I know to look for that now.

ALso, this is the manual pull cable in the Rivian (after it came off) - IMO the nib on the end is pretty small but maybe I was caught up in the moment of wanting to unstuck my car!

yeah, probably on me. I'm sure I gave it more of a parachute ripcord type tug - lol

Thanks for posting this. May end up saving one of us later.
Kinda related, we had an eTron before our R1S. Handle got stuck once and Audi has a similar release tab. It literally pulled out just like in your case. When I checked on line later found out that was a common thing for eTrons. Maybe the ”engineer” that designed it quit Audi and went to work for Rivian 🤣

I think I'll throw a pair of needle nose locking pliers in the car. Looks like one could grip the cable behind the nib and still use the release.
Thanks for the photo.

the end you see is what attaches to the charging port. The other end (where the red loop is) is a finger pull. So if you pull this off as I did, there is no getting your hand down the fender to release anything (without taking more stuff apart).

Thanks for the clarification.
