After finding thread to 'initialize' speaker so it actually works, I brought to beach yesterday and it wasn't even loud enough to be heard over sound of waves, what a piece of .... is this literally just a mobile charger or is it supposed to be taken seriously as a speaker?

It doesn't work as a mobile charger either (or at least mine doesn't).

Sorry to say that if you didn't get it for free, you not only wasted your money, you paid to make your vehicle worse.

You will find many threads here discussing options for replacing the worthless speaker with something useful like a storage cubby.

My volume is fine and the sound is very good, though it took me a while to figure out and work the controls. I haven’t taken it camping but used it in a cabin, and the speaker plus light came in handy out by the fire pit. Have yet to charge off of it.

I had the same experience when I was at the beach as well. If it wasn’t standard and I had to purchase as an option, I would never spend $450 on this speaker. I have a JBL Boombox 3 WiFi version that I paid $400 for that, and it literally blows this away without breaking a sweat. Plus, the battery life is 20+ hours. Sure, it’s not as compact and it doesn’t fit in the console, but for me it doesn’t matter. ?

My speaker is a brick. Where is this thread to "initialize" speaker?

The manual covers a few things that are disgusted here.

Camp speaker is a POS for the most part. It works fine for me if I use it at home plugged into the outlet. But even then, it can take several attempts to connect Bluetooth.
This was a great idea, but it was poorly executed. I think they should either fix the issues, or abandon it.

I have found some issues connecting to bluetooth, but I have a lot of connected devices.

The sounds is loud enough to hear when I am vacuuming the R out.

I agree with some thoughts on here that It probably won't win any audiophile competitions but I think it hits its function pretty closely.

My favorite part (silly to be sure) is that It is fun to show friends and family when you are demoing the vehicle... Viola a hidden freaking speaker. ..... and the crowd goes ooooohhhhh! lolz :p

I am ready to divorce the camp speaker. I’ve tried to like it and use it as intended over two years but it fights me most of the time. The max-volume connect/disconnect sounds are obnoxious when camping. It connects to BT when I don’t want it to and refuses to connect half the time when I do. The buttons don’t provide a lot of feedback and are hard to see in the dark. The lantern never seems to stay on for more than a few minutes. About one in three times I undock it from the truck to find it dead. Yes I’ve used it to charge my phone and play music successfully, mostly not while camping. It’s just too difficult to use.

I feel similarly in that the speaker is not bad, but it's not worth the steep asking price. It did teach me that when my lease ends I would appreciate still having a decent bluetooth speaker, and I'll probably spend a couple hundred to get one at that time, but not $450 to get the camp speaker again.

I recently did a side-by-side comparison (using the same music played through the same source) of the Rivian speaker and the JBL Charge 5. The results were- the Charge 5 had much better bass and a better overall (a fuller) sound than the Rivian speaker. The Charge 5 has plenty of volume too even though it's smaller and lighter than the Rivian speaker.
I have a cheap $59 amazon BT mini-boombox that we take to the beach with us, it's sound is just as good as the Rivian speaker.

The Rivian speaker is built like a tank, just like Rivian vehicles, but they should have paid a little more attention to the sound quality since it's a speaker.
