One thing I really liked about my model Y (not Elon) was that the cabin temp was always (while battery was above 20%) kept below a threshold when parked. I understand this was because high temps would harm the screen. The threshold could be set to 95, 100 or 105. Since I live in Tucson AZ this really mattered. Cabin temps here can get astronomical in the summer (or fall or spring) sun. Surprisingly limiting the temp to those levels was enough to make re-entering the car perfectly OK.

I have been unable to find any comparable feature in my R1S. You can set camp or pet mode or just turn on the AC, but it's unnecessary to keep the car at normal levels. Have I missed something?

It seems like it would a trivial feature to add.

There is absolutely a "running AC to protect screens" mode but it's fully automatic.

I haven't had an issue since putting up a shade in the glass roof (Gen 1 so it's not active like Gen 2), but have seen it several times before that.

But what is the temp threshold?

Absolutely no idea. Rivian has defined "too hot" somewhere.

Not clear to me if it's ambient or specific to the center stack display, but I suspect the latter, as I haven't had an issue since installing the screen (but the truck still gets well over 100 degrees in summer)

Good point. I never used that feature on my Teslas, only pet mode, and it works great.

And I never feel the need to clarify my feelings about the Tesla CEO to justify owning my Teslas. Bought my Teslas on the merits, for the glorious things that they do, for the engineering marvels that they are, full stop.

Pound for pound, byte for byte, Teslas are the greatest EVs to this day. They set the bar. Imitated in what they do always. Even Rivian does it. And do not try to shoot the messenger. Just look at the latest Rivian update; it copied the outside mirrors tilting downward when on reverse, straight out of the Tesla playbook.

I agree with 99% of what you say! Tesla really is a great product. As far as I'm concerned Tesla is BY FAR the best bang for buck in a new car, gas or electric. A lot of car for the price, with great tech.

That said - I chose to get a Rivian, because it likewise is a fantastic, and extremely well thought out product. It's done a good job taking a lot of the strengths of Tesla, and differentiating in a way that adds a lot of value. TBH, when it comes to tech stack, I hope they take more cues from Tesla. That, combined with the insane capabilities and more robust build quality would make Rivian unstoppable. Rivian is not for everyone, but it is a wonderful product.

The 1% I disagree with is the mirror tilt. That is not something tesla invented. That's been a thing in the auto industry for over a decade. Both Tesla AND Rivian copied that from others

Tucson -- the place where the outside air temp in July feels like the greenhouse inside of my vehicle in Michigan.

I've only seen the AC start automatically once, and it was reading over 135 degrees inside the cabin. At 100 degrees, doesn't seem like we really should be worried. We just have too much information at our disposal nowadays. Let the car do its thing. These expensive machines do not need to babied so much.

Fair point. To be clear, I am not in any way implying that Rivians are inferior. As far as I am concerned, my R1S is one of the greatest vehicles I ever shall own. I like it a hell of a lot. Would buy it again in a heartbeat.

I think even longer than a decade - I had a 2002 Range Rover that had it!

Love my Tesla as well but tilt down mirrors in reverse were around before Teslas. I always hated the feature and turned off on my Holdens.

For me, the curb rash I have spared my wheels by hugging the curb ever so closely to also avoid the dings from car doors parked next to me, this feature is a godsend.
