I

I live in a rural area in central Utah. Today I needed to make a trip to Walmart in Ephraim, UT. It's a 22-mile drive from where I live. On the way a big truck went by and I heard a rock hit the windshield. It didn't sound so bad. I've heard worse on other cars. I thought I would check for a chip later. I was in Walmart for about a half hour. When I was driving away I noticed an enormous crack in the right side of the windshield. I felt it and you can't feel it at all on the inside, it feels sort of rough on the outside. I immediately thought of vandalism. It looked like somebody had hit the windshield with a hammer or rock. Would somebody on a crusade against EV's go around breaking windshields? This would have happened in the parking lot of Walmart, with people coming and going. It would be difficult to get an opportunity to do it unobserved. Maybe somebody brazen enough would do it anyway even though they were observed and quickly drive off. Another option is that the rock that hit the windshield cracked it worse than I thought and I was just too busy driving to notice it right away. Maybe the windshield is made of material that doesn't make much noise when it breaks. Another option is that the heat of the sun enlarged the crack somehow. The temperature was in the eighties, not really hot. I haven't tried to get it repaired yet. It is ugly, but if it doesn't spread, I may not get it repaired right away. it doesn't block my vision at all. My immediate concern is how it happened and that it doesn't happen again. Are Rivian windshields so fragile that a small rock hitting it can cause that much damage?

It does resemble a rock impact. It doesn’t appear to he vandalism. It’s possible you didn’t notice the crack right when it happened with the bugs guts masking it or it’s possible the crack expanded while you were in the store. The windshields are going to be more prone to impacts and cracking because of the angle. It’s not as vertical as a Jeep or Bronco, but it’s more than a normal truck. If it were me, I’d just get it repaired as long as it’s not in front of the drivers seat. Most insurance companies won’t allow it to be repaired if it’s in front of the driver.

I didn't know you could get something as bad as that repaired. That's certainly what I would do, especially if it would look better.

If that's your only damage, I'd say the rock did it. Looks like that impact would have broken any windshield. I had a similar one years ago and was told that it was not repairable but it's worth asking. Maybe tech is getting better for this.

Get it fixed quick before it spiders bigger. It won't be perfect but can slow it down. Rivian windshields cost a fortune. The glass is laminated so only the he outer layer is cracked.
