I watched the tech unplug and plug in my 12v battery 3 times when it was all disconnected for service. He didn't seem worried.

I don't understand why cars have basically become unserviceable! It's a tough adjustment for someone what has never brought their car to a shop. I've done all my service on all my cars head to toe. For my lexus I got the toyota tech software so I can perform some hidden functions.

I wouldn't mind buying tools but not if it's $500 for each tool vs $500 for one tool that does all.
Agreed, and that's where local clubs and DIYers come in. Clubs can purchase these tools and share them, DIYers like us can poke and pry to figure out best servicing practices... At least until someone ponies up the big bucks for a service manual and shares it.

Edit to add:
I have a SMART SENSOR TPMS programmer I happily share with anyone on here, save a few bucks over OEM ones. I used to use a mechanic's shop on base for my Land Rover before COVID shut it down, with lifts and pullers and all the tools you need. I'm hoping it comes back... And they get a lift strong enough for the Rivian haha.

It should be able to take being disconnected from it's 12V battery, I mean the designers had to plan for an eventual dead 12V battery right?

If you have a single 12V battery Rivian, it's much easier to disconnect vs the dual 12V batt vehicles.

There may also be a dedicated or common fuse you could pull just for the e-brake and ABS system instead of disconnecting the 12v batt?

Took wheel off today. You definitely could release the brake then just pull the connector to the servo.

Not sure if the truck will freak out and then you'll need service to reset your computer or if it would be happy when you reinsert.

So I went the simple way. Wife put vehicle in neutral let go of brake, I removed the 2 14mm bolts. You can leave the pads and tilt and grease the sliders if really worried.

All done took maybe 2 mins. The annoying part is the sound the truck is making in neutral pedestrian alert.

I'm betting the tow mode would be a better option, I was going to get her to enable it but it would let us while in tire change mode.

My pads looked even and basically new.

I think we should get a bunch of folks together and split cost of the service manual. Anyone with me?

I rarely use the brakes and I expect them to last forever.
On the Gen 1 at least, adaptive cruise control only uses the brake pads to moderate speed, no regen. If you use Driver+ often you will wear through your pads way faster than expected.
