Backup power - replacing a gas generator for now, V2H in future?

Is backup power important to you?

Itā€˜s a different case if you live in a rural area. We rely on well water for cooking, bathing and sanitation. No electricity, no well pump.
You don't have to be in a rural area. We live in suburbia 6 miles from the White House and the picture is the same here plus we heat and air condition with electricity (heat pumps).

Without the Powerwall what is going to clock the inverter(s)?
I'm not an engineer, so I was assuming that software in the gateway would handle where the electricity was routed. I could be making an ass of U and me, but mostly me.

I've stood around with the people that are going to be installing this equipment for me and they can't answer these questions so don't feel foolish. As best I can tell the Gateway monitors the the grid and if its voltage or frequency go out of bounds it opens a contactor isolating the house from the grid. At the same time it signals the master PW to start discharging its battery pack and supply the load. It knows its SoC and the SoCs of all the other PW connected and clocks the system for full solar output. As the packs fill charging current needs to be curtailed and it signals the inverters in the PV system to pull back by shifting the frequency of the AC it produces. As I said I believe all the smarts required to do this reside in the master PW but others think it is in the Gateway. But there is no inverter in the Gateway and it cannot, therefore, clock a PV array. You need a PW to do that.

Growing pot in the basement? Lol
Plants need to survive in a power outage too, right? Maybe redecorate the kids' rooms to more of a tropical jungle theme.

Also, I wish we had basements in Central TX, but the bedrock has other ideas.

Texas and Utah are so 1973, from a Left Coast perspective.

In parts of Oregon, people have simply replaced their Roses, Rhododendrons, and Azaleas with Cannabis. With last week's historic heat wave, the only thing higher than the temperatures were the residents.

"Dude! Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are both like, literally, out of Vegan IPA and Cheetos! This blows!" "Do you remember when we went to that Dead concert without weed?". "Yeah! I don't know why, but that music like, literally sucked!" "That was soooo bogus, man!"

All that said, I miss my time and my friends in Texas and Utah.....

Sorry to completely derail this thread, but one of my employees who lives in Seattle sent me this article several years ago shortly after WA legalized marijuana. I got a good laugh out of it.

Well if you have a bad storm and flooding in your basement with the sump pump not running. That would be a nice option to have. It would add peace of mind for me as I donā€™t have a backup generator at this time

Greg,

That is hilarious! Operation Orange Fingers looks looks like it was a complete success. Speaking of orange, I wonder if the ASPCA and/or PETA noticed that even the Orange Tabby looks stoned.

"MeWow!"

So what happens if the storm rolls in while you are at your weekend retreat and the power goes out? You'd better have a backup for your sump pump that doesn't depend on your truck and I do. Given that, of what value is house backup from my truck?

I mean, battery backups have been a thing for sump pumps for decades.
regular old deep cycle 12V battery gets you~8hrs. Donā€™t need big storage

Try to understand these comments beyond literal interpretation. As an example I have sump pumps that could easily be covered with lead acid batteries. But I also have heat pumps which keep the house warm in winter. The max Rivian battery would run the main heat pump for 3 days but not if it isn't at the house.

In case you are stuck with literal interpretation I will repeat the post slightly reworded:

So what happens if the storm rolls in while you are at your hunting cabin and the power goes out? You'd better have a backup for your heat pump that doesn't depend on your truck and I do. Given that, of what value is house backup from my truck?

Iā€™m really hoping for V2H at launch. That would be a great benefit for any homeowner.

At least I could run critical systems with the confirmed (3) 120v circuits. Septic pump, furnace fan (gas heat), and a bedroom for lights and phone power. Running the fridge would be 4th on our list. Considering not all 4 circuits would need to run simultaneously, I could engineer a way to flip power around every 6-12 hours, but Iā€™d rather not do the gymnastics. Our worst outage in 4 years has been 12 hours, but the neighbors told me about a 2 week outage within the last 10 yearsā€¦
