My experience is with Apple Music and the difference between native and BT is obvious. I'm running my data through a 5g hotspot rather than connect+ so that's not a factor.

I'm curious how a hybrid implementation would work with your adapter. In my current setup, when I'm listening to Apple Music through the native app and running Waze on my phone, the announcements from Waze play over bluetooth and the Rivian system will play them over my native audio. It works fine except it would be great if I could use the main screen rather than my iphone screen. If that's the way your EV Play adapter works, then I don't see a problem other than not being able to manage the music interface through CarPlay.
That implementation would remain. You would be running Waze via AA/CP, which is essentially your phone, but Waze would be up on your Rivian screen. You would continue to hear Waze announcements over your Rivian audio system.

I personally wouldn't do this but I do wonder what the risks associated with using this "Android-based hardware device?" Specifically:

Might Rivian detect this modification and void the vehicle's warranty?

This reminds me of ECU unlocking/tuning for traditional vehicles, but updated for the EV era.
There have been quite a few examples of other aftermarket accessories that have not invalidated the warranty, namely because proving that someone's rock guards, dash cam, MagSafe mount, etc. caused their bumper to fall off would be an impossible hill to climb for a car manufacturer -- especially considering vehicle warranty protection for consumers is pretty strong.

I like comma.ai as a case study since they get this question all the time. Borrowed from the FAQ's on their Website, which quotes the FTC Website:

"Simply using an aftermarket or recycled part does not void your warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act makes it illegal for companies to void your warranty or deny coverage under the warranty simply because you used an aftermarket or recycled part."

https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0138-auto-warranties-routine-maintenance

I would group EV Play in a similar bucket, classifying it as more of an add-on rather than a modification. I'm not actually changing anything. ECU tuning to me is different, where you're actually modifying something in the engine and causing it run outside of spec. I had a friend back in the day with a brand new Dodge Ram that put in one of those after-market tuning chips. His engine blew shortly thereafter and guess who had to pay for a whole new engine!

Thanks so much, Alex, for the update email you just sent out. Everything looks amazing.

I'm afraid I haven't been following _all_ of the posts on this thread, and I didn't see it in the email... What do you estimate the unit price to be?
No email for me...what did the email said?

Yes, steering wheel controls all work.
Hey there! Interested in this and have been on the email list for awhile, but this comment begs me to ask a question related to Comma Ai. I know you're busy trying to launch this and maybe you'd prefer not to answer or disclose until after launch and people get their hand on it... (or if you want to work on it yourself and claim the community bounty..)

So Rivians (Gen1) are now compatible with OpenPilot! The catch is we're stuck with using Rivian's stock ACC because we don't have access to the set-speed signal and/or direct access to any of the driver control signals to be able to command the Comma to adjust speed.. (And Rivian's ACC is bad.. please save us)

We'd love if you'd be able to point the OpenPilot community towards where you're seeing those signals! I'm sure both of these products can co-exist, I was just hoping you'd possible hop over to the OpenPilot discord to share or at the very least share some hints with Lukas over there?

Thanks, can't wait for the pre-orders!

I could be wrong, but being able to control the audio with the steering wheel could just mean controlling the bluetook audio. No signal processing needed for that.

Bingo! I hope the comma folks (or anyone, really) figure it out. I find it odd that those signals don't go through the autonomy module like everything else related to well, autonomy.

For those that didn't get Alex's email...

EV Play Update - March 30, 2025
Hi All,

Hope everyone is doing well. A lot of new and exciting Rivian-related news over the past week or so, from the launch of the company's Also “microbility” spinoff, to RJ’s Nvidia chat about AI, to some great software updates for Gen 1 & 2 owners. I don't think I have even been so excited about a side mirror reverse dip!

Speaking of exciting updates, I have a few of my own. Let's dive in...

1) Apologies for being a bit radio-silent lately. I decided in early March that I wanted to implement a bit of future-proofing in to the EV Play hardware by including a CAN bus interface module. This took quite a bit of development which zapped a fair amount of my free time to send updates and respond to emails. Again, sorry about that. However, I think you will forgive me given what EV Play will be able to do in the not-so-distant future. Read on...

For those of you unfamiliar with CAN ("Controller Area Network") bus, it's essentially a standardized communications network used in most modern vehicles (also ships, planes, tractors, etc.), to enable the various electronic subsystems to communicate with one another. In the case of EV Play, the device will now have the ability to read things like speed, selected gear, pedal position, state of charge, battery temp, and a lot of other metrics. What does that mean? Well, if you thought those holiday car costumes were cool, imagine having them year-round and actually providing real functionality. Want to pretend you're driving an old Ferrari F40 supercar? This could be the screen in front of you:
Rivian R1T R1S Apple CarPlay & Android Auto Solution is Coming Soon... (seriously) -- by EV Play gmdwsfpYyI7f
Want something a bit more modern? No problem:
Rivian R1T R1S Apple CarPlay & Android Auto Solution is Coming Soon... (seriously) -- by EV Play P63-5aAnpIhb
You can even design your own. And yes, those would be all working gauges, with the tachometer equating how hard you are pressing on the accelerator, your battery level being the fuel gauge, and the motor temp being your engine temp. Cool, right?

Note that this won't be available right at launch, but again, the intention was to at least provide the future capability on the hardware side. There is a lot of information about your vehicle available with CAN, and so the possibilities are really endless with respect to all the cool EV Play apps & features both myself and the EV Play community can develop.

2) I have finally landed on a price. Drumroll please....it's going to be $399.00 plus tax & shipping. I am also going to implement a small $2.99/mo. subscription fee to help cover things like software updates, customer support, hosting, and future feature development (such as the custom CAN features above).

3) I will be sending out pre-order information later this week. Reserving your EV Play unit will require a fully-refundable, $99.00 deposit. I will be ordering the parts for a few extra units, but please note that the lead time to receive the parts and build & ship the units will be ~3 to 4 weeks. Meaning, if there is a remote chance you want one, you should probably put a deposit down. You can always change your mind later.

4) I just launched the EV Play Forum, located here. If you could do me a big favor and register, it would be greatly appreciated. This is intended to be a focused space to discuss all things EV Play, infotainment, and related technologies such as V2X. Since it is a new forum, let me know if things are not working as expected or you experience issues registering. Make sure to check your spam folders if you aren't receiving forum emails.

While you're there, feel free to visit the "Feature Request" topic and let me know what features -- beyond the usual things like Android Auto, CarPlay, and watching movies -- you want your vehicle to be able to do. The more crazy it sounds, the better! For example, RJ talked quite a bit about AI in the video above. I feel AI will be a big part of EV Play's future, so what sort of AI functionality do you envision? Want EV Play to order you a pizza to the house? Book a doctor's appointment? Find an available charging spot? Respond to an email?

5) I have a shortlist of beta testers I will be reaching out to in the next week or so. Keep your eyes glued to your inbox!

That's all I have for now. As always, reach out with any questions and please forward this to anyone you feel would be interested.

Cheers,
Alex

Big one is what happens when one decides they don't want to pay the sub?

Just locked out of updates? Or will it turn into a brick?
Decide to not give it internet, certain things function still or is the whole thing "DRM" locked where if it can't call home, you're SOL?

Also, it's not clear (to me at least) whether it will fully work while the car is in motion (e.g. use case: passenger wants to watch Netflix/YouTube/Plex on the big screen while the car is in motion), or if it will limit functionality to specific driving-only apps that OP decides.

I think OP hinted in this thread at restricting functionality to driving-only apps, but it's not explicit, nor is it mentioned in his FAQs on his website. Something definitive - one way or the other - would really help people decide whether they should pull the trigger on spending $399 + monthly sub.

I don’t think a subscription for hardware will work. He can’t turn off the functionality if you don’t subscribe. Better to just charge $100 more with no subscription. Can then charge for significant upgrades.

Since you’re already digging into the instrument cluster (I assume that’s where the custom gauges will go, not the main screen), how hard would it be to integrate next-gen Apple CarPlay? Might be pretty cool option to keep it simple until you can offer fully customized gauges and such.

I think others mentioned it, but would be nice to get more functionality from the rear screen, especially ability to play Netflix and such on it (while driving of course).

For the CarPlay switch, would be nice to integrate that to either an existing Rivian switch, or perhaps work with one of the several custom charging pad folks to integrate a switch into the pad somewhere. Would prefer something not so loud and clicky too.
