Hello everyone, my name is Alex and I've been working over the past 5 months to get Apple CarPlay and Android working on my Rivian center display. I'm happy to announce that I have recently cracked the code, and I'm currently trying to bring this functionality to all Rivian owners. To do this, I have created an Android-based hardware device called "EV Play," which I'll be producing and selling in the next month or so.

While working on this process, I started to realize that EV Play could be a lot more than just CarPlay and Android Auto. The Rivian screen and sound system are amazing, and so the project quickly morphed in to a full-blown infotainment system.

At the end of the day, I certainly don't have all the answers. And so in addition to the physical device I would like to eventually build a community where all of us can discuss new ideas and propose new features.

I still have a few bugs to work out, but I'm pretty close to getting them resolved. In the meantime, I have put up a website with a short video I made, along with some additional information and an interest form. It is located here. Please help spread the word on other sites and groups, as this is a very exciting time for Rivian owners.

Here is the video as well:

I have to leave for my job but I'll try to get to the boards later in the day, should you have questions. The website also has my email address if you need to reach out. I expect a fair amount of messages so your patience is appreciated.

Cheers,
Alex

That's fantastic, how easy is it to switch back and forth from the Rivian UI to this? I'd love to hear more on how you were able to override the Rivian UI but understand you if you don't want to share all the details.

This is awesome if legit. Pretty excited about this. If easy to switch between UI's I would be highly interested.

Super easy. As of now, you will have a small wireless button that you can mount anywhere, that toggles back and forth between the UIs. There will also be some automatic toggling, such as going back to the Rivian UI when you put the car in reverse (in order to see the vehicle cameras). The EV Play UI will also have an on-screen button to go back to the Rivian UI.

So, asking the dumb question:
is this just a device that's being cast to the vehicle using the native cast function?

At which point, the whole thing is moot the second we put it in drive?

Or did you somehow 'hack' Rivian so we can use Waze while driving?

I think we need more details...

I agree, the problem is that you can't use the cast function while the vehicle is moving. Not that you can't get it working while stopped. Lets see it working while the vehicle is in motion.

I think there's just enough here in the screenshot to tell that the vehicle is in park.

No, nothing to do with the current tethering functionality and so yes, works while driving. With that said, there are various laws and ethical considerations as to which apps are available while driving, namely disabling the video playing capabilities unless in Park.

Good eye, but that's because it's hard to film, go through all the functionality, and drive at the same time! I'll release additional videos in the near future and happy to show specific features upon request, time permitting.
