I was here over the weekend, and given that I've never seen another Rivian off-road around here, I was wondering if anyone had explored this spot in Vermillion Cliffs National Monument in northern Arizona. It's definitely worth the trip, with closest charging in Kanab.

The terrain is pretty straightforward - mostly graded desert track with sand. However, if it hasn't rained for a while that sand can get pretty powdery, and it's recommended not to try this trail alone.

I’m headed that way in April! Plan to camp overnight in our R1T. Then to South Coyote Buttes the next day (we got on of the few permits). I bought AT tires just for this trip. Coming from MN. Also going to Toroweep and Alstrum Point and Valley of the Gods. Among other places.

Before going to the white pocket we will stay overnight and charge at a lodge in Marble Canyon.

Sounds like a great trip. AT tires are 100% needed for this area (I live in Southern Utah).

Toroweap may be a stretch depending on your range. The Tuweep campground is 85 miles from the nearest supercharger, and if you decide to put the Rivian in offroad mode once you leave pavement (recommended to get all wheel grip) that's a good dent in your available range. I'd also recommend you stop at the campground, and hike the remaining half mile or so to the overlook - that last half mile stretch is significantly more technical than what comes before it. You need a permit to visit Tuweep - they've been trying to cut down on the numbers of people who head out there.

I visited Toroweap a few years ago in my Jeep. I had planned to stay two days, but ended up only staying one as it was hot and windy when I was there. I did manage to get the photo I was looking for though ;)

For White Pocket, it will be good to have a way to recover yourself from the sand. Chances are it will be pretty soft when you are down here.

I haven't made it out to Alstrom Point yet - conditions where never quite right when I was in the area. Feel free to reach out if you have any other plans or need input on any trails etc.

Thanks for the advice! I'm used to driving in snow but this desert off roading thing is new to me.

I got some MaxTrax recovery boards. I've got tow straps and shackles. Will be carrying a spade. So I think I'm pretty well prepared. Will air down the tires as needed and have a compressor to air back up.

For Toroweep, we have a campground reservation and a permit for the area. Will be staying the previous night in Kanab at a hotel and will start the day at 100% on a Max Pack R1T.

Love your photo of Toroweep.

Last summer we did a road trip to Quebec and Nova Scotia. Had a great time, highly recommend that.

For sand, airing down is key (Rivian recommends 31psi), and you'll want to keep up momentum whenever possible. It may be tempting to pull over to take photos, but that's a good recipe for getting stuck. The sand in this area can literally be like talcum powder when dry.

I'd also recommend some kind of satellite service - newer phones have them, and I also have a Garmin Inreach (which I've had to use the SoS function on once on a trip in another part of Utah).

If you are in the St George area let me know, and I can show you some trails around here.

This place is on my to-do list. I mapped out charging nearby and it's scarce but not totally terrible. There's even a nearby campground that is allegedly EV-friendly with 240/50 power.

(Rivian recommends 31psi)
This is ultra conservative for 20" ATs and I have done hundreds of off road miles at 23-25. Even on rocks, and very aggressive high speed washes, no issues. For sand, you could even go lower.

If anyone wants to share their charging plans, I'd love to add it to my arsenal. I'm thinking we will do this April-May and probably not camp there.

We will be there in mid-April. This is my plan. This is from the PlugShare trip planner. Not many people know about the Trip Planner function in PlugShare but it is pretty much all I use.

Will be starting from Cliff Dwellers Lodge in Marble Canyon with 100% charge. Will also be going to South Coyote Buttes which doesn't register in the map database so I can plot it. Ending in Kanab, about 150 miles total.

When I was in early elementary school, I thought quicksand was going to be a common problem in my life because all the quicksand in film and TV.

Turns out it was sinkholes.

Have fun out there!
