Drove mine from Tucson to "Arizona's Beach" - Rocky Point / Puerto Peñasco a couple years ago.

No problems at all, other than the only charging in Puerto Peñasco is at hotels that charge $50 for level 2 charging. (My aunt was staying at the RV park that was part of the same resort, so I just used a 240V 50A outlet in the empty RV site next to their site when I was visiting them.)

The biggest annoyance was the Mexico insurance. Cost more for one week coverage just for the Rivian than six months of my normal US coverage for three vehicles. (And my US insurance includes having a teenager drive a Subaru WRX in the mix!)

ok. I used to drive a Toureg throughout the heart of Mexico while living there for a year and never felt anything. had a new jetta wagon a few years later. maybe a superexpensive car draws more attention. Just curious. thanks for responding.
I too have spent a great deal of time in Mexico and drove a top of the line Toureg throughout the country. Never once felt uncomfortable. Just drive during the day on the highways as the roads are not well lit. There are plenty of Teslas around, but I do not know how going electric is for travel. Would love to hear someone else's experience. I drive a R1T in the US, but love seeing the BYD Hybrid trucks down there...

Just booked an airbnb in a Golden Zone gated community in Mexicali for 2 weeks as a base for moving out of my place in San Diego later this fall. Chatgpt says I'll be fine...

Any recommendations for insurance? Looks like Baja Bound will do a 3 month 100k policy for 700 (strangely 200 cheaper than the 14 day policy).

Maybe head down to Rocky Point after.

USA insurance covers a distance into Mexico. Check to see how far your policy covers since Mexicali is on the border.

Travelers doesn't. It only explicitly covers US, Canada and PR. The word Mexico doesn't even appear in my insurance documents.

State Farm is pretty vague on the subject:

  • An insurance policy from a Mexican company. Unless you stay in the border area the entire time that you are in Mexico, you'll need, at minimum, auto insurance from a Mexican company that includes liability coverage (also called "liability for damages to third parties"). If you don't purchase insurance online before entering Mexico, there are insurance companies and retail insurance agent offices on the other side of a border crossing where you can purchase insurance. If you have any questions regarding auto coverage when you are close to the border, please contact a State Farm® agent.

I've used Baja Bound for all Auto and Moto trips down there. If you are going longer I think there are other strategies...

Ended up just renting an Airbnb in SD for the move out but still took the Rocky Point trip! I booked an Airbnb with a garage and am just hooked up to the 120v. I made sure to charge to 90+% in Gila Bend (was running short on time for the 8 pm border crossing closing) and got here with like 30%. Looks like I'll be to 85% after 3 days on the charger - should be plenty since the distances I'll be traveling around town are short (here for a week).

This is my first time in Rocky Point, but honestly seemed easier (and cheaper) just to charge in my Airbnb garage than deal with $50 and hassle of procuring L2 charging at a resort (plus I get to use the 120v charger that I never use!). Totally forgot to filter for Airbnb's with ev chargers - imagine there must be a few (neighbor has 2 Teslas in his 4 car garage). I do feel like I stick out a bit, but haven't felt unsafe at all (and it was dark by the time I made into Mexico coming south). Hopefully I can make it back through Sonoyata without getting pulled over (only $40 in cash in the wallet - ready for that). That seems like the biggest risk to me.

So what happens if you have a serious maintenance issue with your Rivian while in Mexico.

You get it towed - same thing you do anywhere you have a serious maintenance issue.

Assume this cost would be the owners expense as I doubt Rivian covers out of the country towing.

Out of almost 40,000 combined miles put on my Gen 1 and Gen 2 vehicles I've had one issue requiring a tow, and even that time, simply waiting for the battery to cool would have cleared turtle mode (granted it would have been until dusk in the Arizona heat).

It's 60 miles to the border - I think I can afford it in the very remote chance that happens during the week I'm here. I choose not to let remote possibilities prevent me from enjoying my vehicle.
