I'm most likely going all EV next year when we trade in our Audi. Coming from someone who didn't even drive an EV until September of last year when my R1 was delivered that's saying something. I haven't even taken a trip of any significance with my R1 yet. I normally take a trip to WI every yearish so that might be interesting. I haven't tested it out in an EV yet, but I don't even care if it's a pain in the ass because I save so much time on my weekly routine not having to stop at gas stations or not having to get oil changes every 5K miles that the occasional trip isn't an issue.

Especially since my wife works 100% from home, and I can remote in whenever I want EV's are perfect for our lifestyle. My wife only gets gas every couple weeks, and letting an ICE car sit isn't the best thing for it as she only drives a couple days a week. EVs are great to let sit assuming you can charge it occasionally. Plus electric is so much cheaper to run. Even if I HATE road tripping with an EV rental cars exist. I could rent something with all the money I save not have to put premium fuel in the Audi for that once a year trip, or just fly up there.

Longtime lurker (1.5 years), first post. Would really appreciate any advice from more experienced folks.
Missed the pre-March prices, sulked for about a month and finally placed an order for the R1S in April 2022 (that's how much I believe in Rivian) knowing it'll be a long wait. Wife placed an order for vw id4 in August, and because we live a few hours from Chattanooga, picked her car up in October (2023 id4). I currently drive a Honda accord (but can't seem to not drive the ev. It's so exciting).

After the new delivery window update, I was moved from Jan-Dec 2024 to May-June 2023 (sorry about folks whose delivery window was pushed back. I can imagine the pain. Not gloating, as this is not the intention of this post). In all honesty, I am conditioning my mind for a delivery window of Sept-Dec, because, this is Rivian. I'll rather be surprised than disappointed.

I am thinking about trading in or selling the accord (2018) since I don't see myself driving it after the Rivian arrives. Also, the kids are young (3 years old and a 4 month old).

Here are my questions;

1. Is it possible and advisable to go all in and become a full ev household? (No cold feet about the rivian, as I plan on taking delivery and enjoying the heck out of it). The conventional wisdom is to keep one ice car.

2. How convenient would this option of an all ev household be?

3. Anything I should consider that I might be overlooking due to my excitement over evs?

We hardly take roadtrips, and we have a level 2 evse installed at home. I live only about 10 miles from work and my wife has a 100 mile round trip to work daily.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Cheers.

P.S. the accord has been fully paid off, so no loans there to worry about.
I would say you are perfectly positioned to be fully electric. We did it in October and haven’t looked back 😃

I'm in a similar situation as @Donald Stanfield - First EV was the R1T last September and I'm a bit surprised at how quickly my attitude has changed in favor of EVs. My wife is already talking about replacements for her Wrangler that gets driven once a week. As far as range goes, we tend to do short road trips (or fly) and my typical towing loop is even doable without needing a public charger. However, we'll aways have the ICE cars for autocross/collecting/pleasure.

I’ll jump back in to second some of the other suggestions about dual home chargers. This set up ads a lot of convenience without having to get a second 40-50A circuit. We have a GrizzlE duo and we just don’t have to think about which car to plug in. We get almost 10kW with one car plugged in 5 and 5 kW with both cars charging and 7-8kW with both cars plugged in and only one charging. It’s worth thinking about if that kind of sweating will affect you or not. If so, you can choose a dual unit that doesn’t do that.

Power outage is one of the things that scares me 😱.
Thanks for your input, Jack
Gas stations are closed during power outages

Full electric here. R1T and Nissan Leaf ‘18. No regrets on the decision. More than that, in May I will have a Canadian trip with my grandson and, hopefully to reach 30k miles 🥳
I’ve got the same pair of vehicles - R1T and 2018 Leaf. I have two L2 EVSEs at the driveway and really enjoy being all electric. I find long-range EV road trips are a mindset change (realizing the stops will seem to take longer) and a bit of a real change (realizing those stops, while close to refueling plus restrooms plus food, do end up taking a bit more time). Your mileage may vary - my wife has come around to being EV only, but still notes the extra time on roadtrips.

We keep a 07 Navigator around as a 3rd vehicle. 212k but runs fine. Maybe gets driven twice a month.
If it’s snowy/icy, I’ll bring that to work rather than the R1T. Not that I think it will perform better, but I’d rather someone slide into me in that thing rather than my pretty new truck.
Also nice to leave parked at the airport if I’m out of town for a few days vs r1t.

If I had to make a sudden long road trip, I’d consider taking it rather than the rivian.

I imagine there’s some other people out there in the same boat who keep an ICE as a 3rd vehicle for bad weather/charging infrastructure/or just a backup.

... outside of potentially buying a classic sports car at some point in the future. Maybe an old Porsche 911 if prices ever come back to reality.
Found this at the LA Auto Show, just sayin

I was keeping my Tundra’03 for several months but I got rid of it (donated for $1). Regarding long trips…cross country trip and NO issues with R1T. Just find the “sweet spot” and ur good to go 🥳

So we have ICE as well but almost never drive, all trips we take are in the rivian, and the "ICE" isn't to be safe or have a fallback but simply because we have it.

This just happened to a major street near our house two weeks ago, dark gas stations and no running traffic lights at intersections.

My wife’s Leaf is in 33k range and she’s been very happy with it. Happy wife….wonderful EV life 🥳🤙

Model X Plaid, Model Y, Bronco - sold for R1T
It looks like we're going to be all electric once my R1T arrives. I have motorcycles that are ICE, and I think that will be so for another 5-10 years, but for cars we'll have a Model Y, Model X, and then R1T. If the R1T is really good, the X will go, perhaps replaced by a Model 3 Performance.

I'm slightly concerned with the EV-only idea overall, but the Bronco I just sold only had 3800 miles while our 2021 Y has 30,000 and and our 2022 X has 18,000, so I don't know where my concern comes from. I guess it's my irrational comfort zone of the inconvenience of ICE that gives me slight trepidation. I know I detest going to gas stations on said motorcycles.

I am maybe planning a trip from L.A. to Austin in April in the R1T with a motorcycle in the back. That gives me a bit of anxiety in the extended travel time and possibility of broken EA chargers. I still need to work out the details in my head.

I always find the power outage argument against EV's interesting...don't gas stations run on electricity?

Volvo XC40 Recharge
Once you go EV, it is incredibly hard to go back to ICE vehicles. Case in point:

Rivian announces major delay.
I freak out and buy a 2021 Volvo Xc40 recharge.
My wife says, “well I am the one driving the kids around so its cheaper and greener for me to use it daily”.
I cant argue with that.
I begrudgingly inherit the wifes Subaru Outback. This used to be our “nice car”. Now It feels like an Amish Buggy in comparison.
I freak out and buy a 2022 Volvo Xc40 pure electric. Now we are all-in EVs.
R1T comes May 7th last year. Angels rejoice in the sky.
Wife drops an R1S deposit 4 months later.

Electric vehicles are just far superior. Its not even close.

From PA:

We took the Volvo to JAX FL, North Carolina, and DC multiple times.

The R1T took us to Alabama, North Carolina x 2 and DC/MD multiple times. Also camping all over PA.

I have never had to rent an ICE vehicle. We have had no major issues. I did have to “hypermile” a couple times. You plan ahead, including contingencies, and add an hour for charging. You gotta eat right?

We each have a level 2 charger. This is critical. Our solar array is nicely complementary to the EV, making both more financially advantageous, even in PA.

Hope that helps!
