Afraid To Use Driver+

This has happened to me multiple times. Since it happened the first time, I never use driver+ when my family is in the vehicle. When I'm by myself, I still use it, I'm just ready to hold the steering in case it tries to deviate. I also deactivate it when I drive in areas with turns or construction areas.

I just posted about this and saw your thread because we're probably using the same tags.

I'm quickly concluding that I don't trust Driver+ enough to use it in any situation. The best use for Driver+ is on long stretches of road—but the problem with that use case is that they are high-speed roads where you're moving at 65+ mph. When Driver+ makes a mistake at that speed, the consequences can be dire. It has happened to me on several occasions, particularly in construction zones that come out of nowhere because traffic around me blocks my view of it.

Driver+ is the entire suite of drive features/options:
Highway assist
Automatic cruise control
Lane keeping assist

Confused me too when people referenced it until someone pointed this out that using driver+ doesn't really indicate which feature they are referring to.

I use driver assist whenever I can. In most areas of Utah it doesn't work. I was using it on I-15 north of Salt Lake and several times I unexpectedly got a message to take the wheel NOW because lane info wasn't detected. I thought the lane looked fine. If anything, lane assist is too cautious. I wonder what would have happened if you had let the car handle the situation. I think the way it handles obstructions is to stop. I've never tried it. I'm looking forward to driver assist being available on two-lane roads.

This reads like a horror story to someone outside the club. People wanting an easier way to remember how to disable in the event of malevolent system behavior (when we all know that in some fraction of cases, we don't even remember which light switch turns off which light in our kitchens), repeated reminders that you just have to be ready to take over again, repeated references to places where it fails, people talking about turning "sharply" into barriers.

This thread on its own would push me to vote to ban these things. Let the car companies create a consortium to build a giant test track and run simlations there with volunteers for about a decade before you let this crap into cars.

And it sounds like the most efficient mass murderer would be some guy with a bucket of white paint just before a bridge on a well, but not overly well used highway, steering all the Driver- and Full Self Own users at 65 mph into a river.

Interesting thread. We’ve only had our R1T for a couple of weeks and only using Driver+ on the day we picked it up. Since we also have a Bronco Sport with Ford’s 360-assist (I think that’s what it’s called) I wasn’t bothered by it at all. But maybe that’s because I tested myself on a really windy road at 45mph in our BS until I chickened out and shut it off, but did learn the extreme limits .
