Rivian already has automatic high beams. What they don’t offer currently is adaptive low beam technology.

Also, for your awareness, LCD tech for headlights doesn’t exist. Three options: halogen, HID, or LED.

Adaptive, not automatic. An adaptive headlight will cut out the sections of the beam that is illuminating the oncoming vehicle while keeping full output on the rest of the road. Totally different and way better than just simple automatic off high beams.

It's usually not the factory cars that are the problem with LED's. It's the dicks in the cars that come with halogen bulbs who get conversion kits without projector lights that are the ones running around blinding people.

Ok let’s clean this up.

First and foremost, the Rivians currently only use automatic high beam, which turn high beams on and off based upon night time driving conditions and oncoming traffic.

Current adaptive headlight technology uses sensors and motors in the headlights adjust the lowbeam based upon conditions like steering angle and suspension travel.

What you referred to as adaptive in your comment, is more commonly referred to “matrix” or “pixel” lighting technology, where cameras and sensors use oncoming traffic data to adjust the projected beam pattern. One can argue this technology will eventually be fully approved in the US, and will makes its way to the “adaptive” headlight nomenclature as an updated standard; but for now, “matrix” or “pixel” lighting is more correct.

EDIT:
There will never be “matrix” or “pixel” technology in current designed Rivian headlights. They lack the hardware to support this functionality. The vehicle used LED technology for low and high beam.

I turned off adaptive lights on my other car. Keeping them on makes me feel sick at night. Matrix lights may be better.

There are those laser lights too.

My Taycan had matrix headlight “capability”, to be purportedly unlocked via a future SW update once the US laws were modified to allow the feature. While the law changed sometime early 2022 IIRC, I sold the Taycan before the feature was unlocked. Not sure where Porsche is with it now.

Law changed but it is different than EU laws so the matrix lights still can’t be used. It will take extra time to get approved. My polestar has mtrix lights as does my sons Tesla. Both still have not been updated to be functional.

Our '21 Tesla M3P has matrix headlights (it's how they do the T E S L A with the lightshow app).

However, they're still not matrix-ing :giggle:

Not sure what or where the hold is.

The approval of the usage of matrix headlights in the US has been granted for about a year now. But the rules behind the implementation took time or are still taking time to roll out. Plus, of course the US rules are different than the rest of the world concerning matrix lights so automakers will have to adapt specifically to the US standards.
