CA is proposing an EV rebate program where manufacturers would match the state incentive dollar-for-dollar. The program would be managed by the CA Air Resources Board and would apply at the time of purchase rather than a later reimbursement. No dollar figure is mentioned but vehicle price limits apply.

"The proposal limits eligibility by vehicle price, not buyer income. New passenger cars qualify only if priced at or below $55,000, while vans, SUVs and pickup trucks are capped at $80,000. Used vehicles are limited to a sales price of $25,000. All vehicles must be registered to California residents."

Could be good for R2 sales if it gets approved soon.

CA has a very high deficit, the last thing we need is another government handout for people spending $80K for eSUV. Automakers are writing down huge losses due to their EV investments. Just today, Stallantis wrote off $26B for their defunct EV investment. Now state is going mandate them to spend more money on non-profitable vehicles?

Let's see if actually goes forward. I hope not.

There's only 200 million available for these rebates, which isn't much in the grand scheme of California's total budget, plus there are qualitative returns on this investment that are not easily quantified. I think the article stated would equal 20 percent of last years EV sales in the state.

It is a good thing CA has a budget surplus so they can afford to offer handouts like this.

With the gutting of CARB standards, we're back to a state-by-state approach to doing something about climate change.

States have immense power to regulate and mandate. More than the federal government in many cases.

While CARB wasn't perfect, it least it was consistent across a large number of states.

Let's see if individual states can come up with something better. Doing nothing isn't an option.

There aren't enough details in this article to figure out how this plan works, but I hope to read more as it progresses.

They really should increase the total price for the vehicles. Not many to choose from with those limitations.

Man, I must be taking crazy pills. I'm verily surprised by the reception, especially in the first few comments here.

People somehow worried this will somehow negatively impact CAs economy...? Is that right? (Comments about budget surplus and deficits...)

Quick fact check: If California were its own country, it'd have the 4th highest GDP *IN THE WORLD.*
It was 5th back in 2024.

Seems like it's GROWING to me. (Full disclosure: I am not an economist)

Go play nice and enjoy good things.

Look closer. They don't know California. They don't even live in California. They don't pay taxes in CA and thus wouldn't be paying one penny into cost of this. They just can't help but get twisted and weigh in with thoughtless commentary whenever they see "California" because of indoctrinated bias.

And the ultimate irony? If not for CA they wouldn't be here and driving EVs. Tesla was not founded in any other state but CA and proved that EVs could be viable transportation.

Not worried about the state's economy. Just fiscal responsibility. Don't need handout for people that can afford to get $80K eSUV.

Did you not file for tax credit? ever? Better give that hand out back.

This program wouldn't just help get more people in EVs. It will also help the automakers build and sell more EVs. And more people driving EVs mean what? More incentive for charging networks to expand and improve charging infrastructure.

Talk about speaking against your own interests. Really, why are you even here?!

This debate will be removed by the admins, so I won't even bother responding.

It is very interesting that I often agree with your posts, but not the ones on this thread. At all.

A much simpler incentive would be to simply reduce the sales tax on the EV. Even a simple 3% sales tax discount would lower the purchase on a $50k vehicle by $1500.

I agree

I have said it so many times. When there is a deficit.... need be more Grinch and tax the petrol side instead of playing Santa and giving money to the EV buyers. But those would be hard decisions.
