Rivian will be hosting its "Autonomy Day" on Dec 11 where the company will be showcasing its AI and autonomous driving technology and plans.

And it sounds like they will demo the hands-free everywhere driving function "Universal Hands-Free." RJ says they've already had Gen2 Rivians using Universal Hands-Free driving completely hands-free around the Bay Area for multiple hours.

UHF will be a fantastic search term.

They said we will have it by the end of 2025. I was skeptical then, but this reduces my skepticism. Maybe it will happen?

People who don't know cars automatically assume just because my Rivian is a BEV it can drive itself like a Tesla can. So finally, finally will be able to say "yep" instead of having to explain why it does not.

Ahhhh, RJ is now back in the game with the potential big payday tied to stock price. Gotta pump it up just like you know who over at T 🤣

Just kidding, can't wait to see what they have!

This is encouraging and hopefully a good bit of it will flow through to the Gen 2 R1s before the ADAS is cul de sac'd like the Gen 1 has been, but from a share price perspective it is worth zero. (I mention because of the $rivn nonsense on the post from the cesspool social media post.) Like it or not, self-driving L3+ is table stakes for vehicles everywhere. Any automaker that is behind can pick up the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor and NVIDIA DriveOS operating system and they will be able to instantly leapfrog Rivian or even Tesla.

As we all know, Rivian has some catching up to do on the ADAS hardware. The Gen 2 R1 vehicles are running NVIDIAs AGX Orin which is 1/10th the computational power of Thor (used in Hyundai, Mercedes, Volvo, BYD, Lucid, Xiaomi, .... etc. etc.).

I think there’s a real possibility that car ownership will actually decrease dramatically.

Waymo is now available in the entire Bay Area in California, including freeways. Waymo can take you anywhere from San Jose to San Francisco.

I can see a future where Waymo offers a $200/mo subscription, giving you 1,000 miles per month of travel. No more paying for insurance, “fuel”, or being liable for accidents.

At a price like that, I think many commuters will forgo a car.

I agree but like me there will be people who have three cars and a bike for a daily commute of 2.5 miles. I make no excuses.

I'm definitely excited for the UHF update but will try not to get my hopes up on timing. I imagine there is a large lag between a CEO demo and a validated system rolling out broadly to customers.

I'd be shocked if it's in the next software update.

(this part of) Rivian's stack is built around DriveOS and Driveworks - and I suspect the autonomy stack was started from hyperon

Found a link to the full interview, it's a good listen/watch:

Other bits RJ mentions
  • R1 was purposely launched with Mobileye with the intent of building an internal autonomy program afterward
  • R2 is a better "perception stack" than R1
  • Rivian is trying to filter out "bad behaviors" from the autonomy, like drivers that floor it on a straight-away after a red light.
  • There's going to be a "drive like a grand-parent" mode and a mode that simulates you
  • More factories after Georgia
  • A lot of thinking around AI applied to robots in the industrial and manufacturing space

I probably missed a lot of other things, but RJ seems very optimistic about self-driving in the next five years.
