Rivian’s Tiny EV Spinoff Is Already Worth $1 Billion

https://www.carscoops.com/2025/07/r...-selling-a-single-product/#Echobox=1752181714

This new company (ALSO Inc.) was spun out of Rivian earlier this year with $105 million in funding from the carmaker and Eclipse, a well-known venture capital firm. While Also is remaining tight-lipped about what products it will launch, company president Chris Yu confirmed earlier this year its technologies would work for e-bikes and small three- and four-wheel neighborhood EVs and micro cars.

In July, Also reached a valuation of $1 billion following a $200 million investment from Greenoaks Capital. That’s a significant jump for a company still in stealth mode, signaling strong confidence from investors in its potential.

According to Bloomberg, Also operates out of Palo Alto and is expected to start with a team of about 80 employees. Yu mentioned that its vehicles would likely be a good fit for US communities where golf carts and other micromobility options are already part of daily life. The company is also aiming to launch several products tailored for both consumer and commercial use in regions like Asia and South America.

It's impossible to evaluate based on the publicly available information.

Also needs to have something VERY special to justify much of a valuation at all. e-bike makers are more in the bankruptcy business than the profitability business these days.

What's with all of the negativity when we - on the outside - really don't know what their product is going to be. This sounds like the remaking's of a PC/Mac or Android/iPhone war when we don't even know the other player or the product. Maybe this is the iPhone of personal mobility that we don't even know we need.

I for one am going to be watching to see what the come up with and then make a decision once there's more to know.

We've seen this tried by automakers and tech companies many times before how many are still playing in this space? Only one that I can remember that has had some success long term might be Ninebot/Segway but that's not even the original Segway and they mostly play in the toys space.

It’s sour grapes for the people who bought at IPO. They’re really mad at themselves for poor judgement

Segway sold and got new owners, who then wisely diversified products portfolio. But it’s still a micromobility company, with offerings that are for youth segment and for recreation. ALSO sound and look like yet another micromobility firm. Whatever they having cooking has to be ground breaking, otherwise… The market is already saturated at the low and mid price levels. Those who played in the high-end, most had much fanfare and flamed out (e.g. Cake and Vanmoof). Rumors say ALSO’s product will be north of 5k. That would make it a very niche product for a very small set of potential customers. Alas, it’s a completely separate company. Whatever happens to it won’t have impact, other than bad press and heckling from people who don’t know what “splinter” means.

Living on property I would LOVE a great and reasonably priced side by side that is fun but have a dump bed and can do real work. Right now the Polaris EV is upwards of $30k and I’m betting Rivian could do MUCH better and there are not any good options.

Agreed. You never know which company will end up succeeding. Even if its never succeeded before, there is always a first. Just like when EVs started and everyone said it wouldn't work. It's growing even if its not as fast as we'd like. Always a first for everything.

It used to be that $1B valuation and being a unicorn meant something. These days, just about any startup in certain categories are automatically valued beyond a billion.

Let’s see where it goes. Glad Rivian spun them out as this is ALSO a distraction for their EV business.
