Drove from Kona to Hilo today on the Big Island of Hawaii in a 2023 Gen 1 Quad R1S with 20” AT’s. Took Daniel Inouye Highway (Locally and more commonly known as Saddle Road. It goes between 2 big volcanoes).

My max elevation was about 6700 ft (which is around the Manual Kea Access Rd). From there, it’s mostly downhill and regen all the way back to sea level in Hilo. I can’t remember my exact elevation but efficiency reading increased to 10.2 mi/Kwh and never moved higher - despite continuing downhill and seemingly in regen until the highway ended about 8-10 miles later.

Rivian R1T R1S I think I found the upper limit for efficiency readings (10.2 mi/kWh) IMG_5322

My wife is from Kamuela and when we visit I am often lamenting not having my R1T with me. I bet we have even seen you driving around I cant imagine there are that many Rivians.
Thanks for sharing this I have wondered what kind of efficiency I would get on that road and down to Hapuna and back.

Ha! That's awesome.

Do you have a net # round-trip? I don't imagine you'd have any trouble getting there any back without recharging (whether you're up country or in Kona town).

Looks like Hawaii Electric got a charger up and running behind Goodwill in Hilo. Sounds like an adventure to rely on it, but it's a good sign overall.

Ya beat me...the best I've seen is 9.56 driving downhill in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

It doesn't look like you hit near 100% charge which would stop regen.

Yeah, that chart is very limited. Actually, until a recent update, the highest it would go was about 4 mi/kWh even when the true number is
Rivian I think I found the upper limit for efficiency readings (10.2 mi/kWh) {filename}
.

How much battery charge did you gain on the way down? I would think 6500 feet of pure downhill could gain +10% or more if not using the friction brake too much (but the vehicle will limit regen so you have to brake).

That is WILD! Very cool!!! I live at sea level in RI; about the highest elevation the truck as been to since delivery was 380 feet above sea level. At best, I am can get in the mid 3's for regen power.

Nice to note! But compensates for the terrible m/kWh going up??

I tied you. I agree that this is the upper limit. Drove from Park City to SLC. 2,500 foot difference.
