Well, unfortunately, Rivian does this. So many features removed from G1 R1's prior to and during production. :(

Even if there were significant theoretical improvements in stability, strength, and convenience, there's no point if no one builds compatible accessories.

And without other auto makers signing on to it as a new standard, no one was going to make compatible accessories.

Nothing was lost because it was never a thing.

I loved the concept, but can live without it. So many accessories already designed for the hitch.

I thought this was such a cool feature. I had hopes they would make a range extender that would mount back there. I hope they bring it back. I am still upset that they eliminated the fold flat seats. Now this. Rivian keeps eliminating the things that make this suv stand out. I do not understand why they would do this. I understand if government regulators rejected the fold flat seats. But I do not see a reason why they would do this. It would make Rivian more money as people would buy the accessories.

This would be a shame if it doesn't come back.

Rivian has removed all references to the rear accessory ports on the R2. RIP OEM bike rack! There's still 1 photo in the gallery with it, but everything else is gone. Link: https://rivian.com/r2

good imagine wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars if not millions to make a replacement for the standard 2" hitch that works just fine.

"Rug Pull Rivian"...official nickname for this company. Stop showing us stuff you have no intention of bringing to market...fold flat seats, accessory ports. Still butthurt about original camp kitchen in R1 as well. Ok, rant over.

Come on guys. To be fair to Rivian all car companies have concept vehicles that evolve quite a bit before production.

While I agree with that, the less unique they are, the more people will entertain other options. If the build the R2 in such a way that it is a basic commodity, why would I buy it? Each day they de-content it increases the chance I'll drop my reservation.

I believe the fold flat front seats were dropped because of regulation, and if true this feature is lost it's really not a big deal....like everyone else has mentioned there are a plethora of hitch receiver options. Rivian will still have their fingerprint of design touches that will make the R2/3 unique.

At the end of the day, this thing has to outcompete the Model Y (and Honda Prologue I guess), which, while a great car to drive (owned one until recently), is about as straightforward as it gets beyond the solid tech Tesla has built over years that powers the vehicle. If I am Rivian and want to directly compete, I need that price range to be very similar to convert people, and that likely means stripping back some of these extra "features" that the average shopper at that price range is looking for or expecting.

Then, as everyone else has said, there's thousands of accessories to fit the standard 2" hitch, and Rivian already has their unique crossbar/other things attachment points "accessory port" which still has a relatively limited product lineup, a few years in.
