Rivian Adventure Network Opens Its First Chargers for All EVs

Rivian R1T R1S RAN is now open to other EVs (starting with Joshua Tree Outpost) joshua_tree_image_copy_section_4-jpe

First sites to reliably serve all compatible EV drivers, with more opening in 2024 and beyond

IRVINE, Calif. (December 5, 2024) – Rivian today announced the planned launch of its first next-generation Rivian Adventure Network charging locations, which allow for non-Rivian electric vehicles (EVs) to charge alongside the company’s R1T pickup and R1S SUV. Using a new charger design to accommodate any compatible EV in North America, these sites are an important milestone in support of electrifying the entire transportation sector.

Rivian’s first next-generation site is its Joshua Tree Charging Outpost in California, which opens today to the public. This year, Rivian expects to open additional charging locations at sites in Texas, Colorado, Illinois, Montana, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New York.

Strategically located to encourage more people to drive electric on their next adventure, these chargers will deliver rapid charging up to 900 volts and feature CCS connectors with support for North American Charging Standard (NACS)-equipped vehicles with an automaker-approved adapter. Support for native NACS connectors, also known as SAE J3400, will come with a future hardware update. Each charger will also include a larger display and tap-to-pay to enable effortless use with or without the Rivian mobile app. Rivian drivers will continue to have the seamless authentication experience they enjoy today.
“Since the beginning, we’ve understood that creating great products like the R1T and R1S only made up half the equation,” said Rivian Founder and CEO RJ Scaringe. “To achieve widespread electrification, you also need a really good charging network. Now, we’re excited to bring the Rivian Adventure Network–with its ease of use and exceptional reliability–to other EV drivers around North America, investing in a future where charging on the road will be simple, sustainable, and convenient.”

Importantly, these new chargers meet the design and siting requirements to be eligible for relevant federal and state infrastructure funding, allowing Rivian to further expand its charging infrastructure with a keen focus on reliability and access for all EV drivers.

In addition to becoming an important source of revenue for the company as the network expands, drivers will also be supported by 100% renewable energy matching when they charge at a Rivian Adventure Network site. Because of Rivian’s selective renewables procurement process, this enables EV drivers to become active participants in the decarbonization of the electrical grid–a critical component in the shift to emissions-free transportation.

Yes, any EV can charge at the Joshua Tree location. That's what the taller dispensers are for, to have a longer cable reach to charge a variety of cars. Any site with the tall dispensers will be open to all EVs.

Except for pre 2020 Teslas unless people pay for a CCS hardware upgrade. This will be true as well when other networks start adding NACS cables on their chargers.

I am glad to see Rivian make their RAN chargers available to all EV's. This is the way things need to go if EV's are to get acceptance and a solid foothold in the automotive landscape.

I agree and based on my travels will be good to get the income from additional usage of the stations. Most of the ones I’ve been to, especially getting away from the west coast I was the only one at the locations.

No word in the article how non-Rivians will pay. Are they adding payment terminals or is a mobile app change coming?

I think it’s both. The new dispensers have card readers and there’s been talk elsewhere of the app being set up for non-Rivian owner use.

Tap to pay card readers! From what I've heard, you can tap first and plug in, or plug in and then tap your credit card. It'll work either way.

Yeah, just saw on an official Rivian post that it was tap to pay from the app and sounds like a terminal as well.

They are installing RAN chargers in Astoria Oregon tight now. But I sure hope the might do some sort of loyalty subscription for us R1 owners. This new LAN is only a mile from my house so I won’t be using it unless my Rivian charger fails.

You can see the price of the Joshua Tree chargers in the Rivian app. It is like Tesla where Rivian gets one price 45 cents and non-Rivian gets another 60 cents.

The article also says a software update would open the other locations using the older hardware.

Another place for Chevy Bolts to park for 1+ hours. LOL. I kid but, every time I've visited an EA site, there's at least one Chevy Bolt plugged in that's been there for ages.
