Even though the solar output will be low, I love the look and the concept. Take my money!
This ?

I'd like to hear bout power output, but still cool to know that I can be recharging a bit while parking outside of my house, even if it's 1%/day. That works for me :)

In a post a long time ago in a Rivian forum that looks, smells, and sounds a lot like this one, I was laughed out of the thread for proposing a solar tonneau cover. '

Let me update my score card...

There’s no way this wires directly into the vehicle, so what’s it going to be - a battery pack in the bed that the solar panels charge that you can then plug in to charge the truck with a J1772 cable?

Just feels way too cumbersome as an aftermarket add-on. I would’ve loved it if it was wired directly into the BMS and charged passively in the background, but I can’t see that happening without it being an OEM design so this is a non-starter for me.

Also I see astroturfing like this and I walk away.

If this can be input directly into the vehicle I would consider it. If it requires me to manually plug it in -- pass.

A solar tonneau cover designed to charge the main battery pack is a mostly laughable idea.

But, I'll admit I've been intrigued by solar for far more mundane use cases, like topping off an auxiliary battery in the bed for powering e.g. camp lights or a heated blanket. But most of those imply some kind of bed top camper or rooftop tent... so I'm really still not sure I see where a tonneau cover would add any meaningful value. It's cool though!

Now, a full solar roof on a GFC wired to an in-bed battery... that could be pretty intriguing...

Spot on! 300W of solar on the roof of my camper is barely enough to run my fridge, lights, fan etc in my camper in full sun.

I argue that charging the traction battery with this type of technology would be net negative.. ie the amount of energy required to keep the truck on, condition the battery etc to maintain it's ability to accept a charge would be more than you would get from the charge.

Came here to say this. Great idea, but the truck wasn't made (wired) for it.
