If you haven’t yet taken possession of your new Rivian, here is something no one tells you: the 4 weeks before delivery feels like 4 months and the 4 weeks after delivery feels like 4 days. No idea the physics playing out in that time dimensional space, but it’s insane how long those 4 weeks leading up to delivery feel. If you’re in that stretch, enjoy it because the anticipation really is special (painful, though it can be).
It’s been four weeks since I took delivery of my Rivian and it’s been a pretty brilliant experience all around. As the title to this post indicates, it’s a 2024 R1T dual-motor, large-pack Adventure Edition with all-terrain tires and black interior. El Cap paint, no power tonneau cover installed with delivery, but one promised by December (we’ll see …).
Delivery was great. Portland Service Center is awesome. Very helpful and supportive folks there who are just great to work with. A special shout out to Tucker at PDX SC. What a great guy.
A few things on delivery for an already-scheduled 20 September service appointment:
+Small chip in the very outside of the passenger-side windscreen (looks like an easy fill)
+ Alignment is off - pulls to the right
+ Suspension feels too loose and I’m going to have them confirm the control arms are supposed to feel as loose as they do (maybe to account for vehicle weight?). Don’t know, but it feels and sounds too sloppy not to have it looked at.
+ Hood was misaligned.
+ Some small scratches on one of the A-pillars as well as some glue residue on the roof from one of the roof rack anchor plates. I was going to clean it myself and thought better of it. Not a big deal, but better they clean it with the right product than me attack it with Goo-Gone or something else and have instant regret when I mess up the finish.
Since delivery, all good on pretty much everything. I have the two most recent software updates and the stereo sounds amazing (as good as our family’s 2024 Tesla MY, which I thought was the better sound system before the update but now think it’s a tie). I like the on-screen graphics and overall it’s well laid out, even with the sub-par Gen 1 cameras. Someone in the forum wrote that the Tesla screen is quicker and feels more like an iPad and I agree. The Rivian’s screen is great, but Tesla’s is better (at least as far as touch-response goes).
Driving experience has been excellent. I love how it drives and the dual-motor is plenty powerful enough for me. Longest trip so far was 350 miles total and it was very comfortable on the interstate and charging wasn’t an issue. I have used it for some truck things, and it’s just great overall.
Charging at home with a Tesla home charger and A2Z adapter has been very easy. I have the A2Z Typhoon adapter for L3, DC fast-charging, but haven’t used it yet (as people have said, it’s HEAVY, like military-grade heavy). Ordering and shipping the pair from A2Ztook a long time, but it was worth the wait. Both adapters seem really well made.
Big endorsement of LinerX all weather floor mats. I have had WeatherTech in other vehicles (notably, a 4th gen 4Runner) and the LinerX are FAR superior. Highly recommend.
I installed the EV Sportline’s Dash Phone Mount with MagSafe Charger which I'll post about separately later (it's great) as well as a mirror tap for a radar detector (also great). Just put black crossbars on today to celebrate the one-month anniversary and they look wickedly sexy with the El Cap paint. I'll post pics separately soon.
Overall, my Rivian experience has met or exceeded my expectations. It’s a fantastic truck and I highly recommend anything Rivian if you’re thinking about a purchase or lease.
Enjoy the Day 1 pics. Hard to believe it’s been a month.
