A brutally honest demo drive with a current Tesla owner. Had a lot of fun doing this one. He is struggling with the decision R1S Tri Max or Tesla Cybertruck. What do you think?

I think there's no reason to own a non-Tesla unless you really need a truck (and the CT is currently a general mess as well as overpriced). R1S vs truck is dumb, it would be more against an X, no?

Tesla is far more capable and safer with actually advanced ADAS and Autopilot.

Rivian is more luxurious and better fitted than the CT.

Which is your priority? I want my Autopilot back, but need a truck.

As much as Tesla now has a stigma, anytime anyone asks me what EV they should get, I typically recommend Model 3/Y, they're just good cheap full feature EVs as a daily driver.

I do hate the "this or cybertruck" comparisons, i get it they get clicks and youtube algorithms love it but... If you want the cybertruck, you want the cybertruck - performance, range and tech aren't really going to change that you want a cybertruck.

I see so many cybertrucks on the road now, as often as i see Rivians. I would take a cybertruck over an R1T if I needed a truck bed. The rivian is a much more of a classy / luxury car. So many people who have cybertrucks have them for the attention and to flex.

My personal opinion as someone who had a CT reservation, I think the cybertruck isn't going to age well where the rivian has a much more timeless look to it.

In what area is a model x more capable than an R1S?

The Gen2 R1S ADAS is pretty capable. Tesla's ADAS has had several well documented crashes because Tesla allows (encourages) it's use where it's not mean to to be used. I personally would not make the argument that a Tesla is "safer" than another vehicle with Level 2 ADAS based on ADAS alone. The R1S is, at least per IIHS, quite safe in an actual crash as well.

Everywhere. In most places the Rivian is just not usable at all, and where it is, it's behind.
Please be specific. Bigger frunk, more storage, an actual third row seat that an adult can safely sit in, more ground clearance... what's not usable? Are you referring specifically to ADAS?

That is literally exactly what I said in one clear and concise sentence.

Aside from that there is charging, which may or may not be an issue in some areas. *WE* have been heavily impacted by the inability to use certain Superchargers where we travel. I've been told this isn't an issue in some places. I can't verify that.

" Tesla is far more capable and safer with actually advanced ADAS and Autopilot. "

Is ambiguous. The sentence can be interpreted as "Tesla's vehicles are more capable (than others in general) and are also made more safe by their ADAS." As well as "Tesla's ADAS is more capable and safe"

on to autopilot and their ADAS... Rivian (basically) gates people to follow the following requirements that Tesla states buried in their limitations and warning section:
Rivian R1T R1S Gen2 R1S Dual P Max - Demo Drive Ride Along w/ Driver deciding between R1S vs. Cybertruck 1724792878543-3z

People being unfamiliar with this and using autopilot in situations where it's not intended has apparently resulted in accidents. That's an inherently less safe system.

Which is my point. It's not a *fact* that autopilot is safer than Highway Assist. It's an opinion that you have, and that I personally disagree with because of the way that Tesla has enabled it.

Is Autopilot more capable in general than Gen1 R1 vehicles? Sure. Than Gen2? That's to be determined.

I use superchargers, I also go places where there are CCS chargers and there aren't superchargers. Other than V2 superchargers the charging is a non-issue at this point. I also find that V3 superchargers derate quickly to be quite annoying.

There are plenty of reasons someone should or would buy a non-Tesla. For example, Tesla does not offer an SUV that provides the overall capability of the R1S or several other vehicles on the road. I've been on several hikes this summer that had forest roads I would not take a Tesla up.

I would feel bad sticking someone in the third road seat of a Tesla.

There are several driver preferences and cost cutting decisions Tesla has made that I personally find pretty annoying as a driver/owner. That was my immediate reaction the first time I drove a model 3, and I've had the same take away since then.

The model 3 specifically is a pretty good car in it's category. I personally wouldn't buy the model X over any of the three row SUVs on the market. The Model S has some very tough competition from Lucid and Porsche. The Model Y is probably objectively the best in it's segment, but I also would not fault someone for buying one of a number of other vehicles based on various preferences.

Wouldn't it be more proper to compare a truck vs truck? R1T(truck) vs the CT.

A R1S is a SUV, not a truck and the only real competitor is the KIA EV9 as the only other real 3 row EV SUV.

The Model X is NOT a Real SUV. Period. It's a Cute Utility Vehicle (my wife calls it that). It is NOT a true SUV.

Tesla's overall software system is still superior and remains the king in the industry. Rivian's system is 2nd, but not a close second in my opinion.

Tesla's overall Auto Pilot System is much better than the Gen 2's system in my opinion. The Gen 2 is good, but I wouldn't say great.

This feels like me recommending iPhones to people. They are good phones. I just hate them and the company that makes them. But if you don't care about my reasons, go for it! Hard to go wrong with one. LOL

Thanks for the video. Always good to hear other perspectives. And a big shout out to the Gaithersburg SC - awesome people there!

Is autopilot even activated at this point?
