It took about 3.5 hours to complete this off road adventure from Ouray to Telluride CO last week. I’ve whittled the pics and vids to 10 minutes of YouTube video for your watching amusement :). If you don’t care to watch it, continue discussing where charge ports should be :). Otherwise get out there and have fun with your Rivian. That’s what it’s for!

Thanks for posting - Looks like an amazing drive (especially from the viewpoint of someone who lives on the east coast). One question for you: Did any of those bridges have a specified weight limit? They look like they should and, at over 7,000 lbs, I'm wondering if the Rivian is too heavy.

Good question! I wouldn’t linger on them! No markings on 130 year old wooden bridges. They were used by trucks long ago to move heavy supplies so I wasn’t worried. Beside the creeks they crossed weren’t much worse than sections of the road that were just rock outcrops!

I posted a couple pics earlier this week. Now for the optional more complete YouTube video of the drive :). It’s a beautiful and challenging off road adventure . Get out there and drive your Rivian like it was designed for!

Pastoral in parts :). I was thinking of adding ‘Night on Bald Mountain’ for the crazier parts of the drive :)

Amazing journey - thanks for sharing!

Did you record any details about the truck and energy used? Like:

- How many total miles?
- How much energy was used?
- What was your state of charge at the beginning and end?
- What tires are you using (I couldn't quite make them out in the video).

I would love to know these things to understand how hard it might be tackle such a trail.

Aw rats! I was too excited to drive that I didn’t check! But I can guess some answers for other info.

We started in Ouray at 80% charged from the DC Chargepoint chargers there.

On our guidebook it said 12 miles but that’s way off since they didn’t include part of it. More like 17 or 18 miles between start above Ouray and exit on back street of Telluride.

Once we got to Telliuride we drove state road around back to Ouray for 50 miles. Then from there to Montrose (another 44 miles) to the RAN station the next day. So a total of 18 miles on trail plus 99 on highway. In all-road. We still had about a 100 miles to spare.

Bottom line : the 17 miles of Imogene Pass won’t chew up all your range :). I’d say we were getting 1.5 miles/KWH on the pass. It’s steep but you aren’t going over 20 mph ANYWHERE.

I was using my off road tires on off road 20 inch wheels. BFG K02s 275/60 at 38-40 psi down from 51 on the highway.

Hey thanks! Sounds like a stress-free trip from a range perspective.

Great video and super creative integrating the vertical video. Your charge port should be on the Telluride side.

I couldn’t find a charger of any flavor on the Telluride side. I think there is a Tesla level 2 there test is worthless to an R1T ;)
