Monday morning, I was driving from NJ to NY (JFK airport) to pick up my wife and on the Verrazzano bridge my truck GPS prompted me to stay on 278 instead of Belt Parkway. It was peak hour traffic and I had to change 2 lanes to the right to stay on 278 and got distracted for few seconds until truck’s front crash warning popped up. I tried to break as much as possible but still ended up rear ending the delivery truck.

The impact seemed to be on the right side as you can see in the pic. No injuries to anyone. I have taken an appointment with an authorized body shop and now waiting for the sticker shock.

After 23 years it was my time to make a mistake. Worst part of it is now I must hear from my teenage daughter that my driving is bad .

Obviously, vehicle is drivable no issues except the ACC. All the sensors in the front and camera seems to be working fine, but for some reason, ACC does not engage itself. Cruise works on its own, but it tries to detect the vehicle in the front and then throws an error.

I did a full reset of the truck and the ACC worked for few min and then throws an error. I did not capture pic of the error will try to post one. I am not sure of this is a software issue or a part issue.

I dont know if it got engaged or not. My setting is normal warning and break. But unfortunately, i have never experianced emergency breaking in R1S. I am assuming it is there and it did start breaking, but i also pressed the breaks as hard as possible.

Is there a way to see from recordings if the emergency breaks were activated?

On some auto brake systems the goal isn't to necessarily prevent a collision but to lessen the impact of it by auto braking. Perhaps that what happened here.
Still sucks but at least nobody is hurt.

Glad to hear you are ok. Whenever I think about a car accident, the only thought goes through my mind is “hope everyone is okay.” I love my R1S as much as you do; at the end, but when everyone is okay, your R1S did what it is designed to do. Hope repair process is not too hectic..

The worse part of this....now your teenage daughter will not let this one go ;)
I am glad to hear everybody is ok, that's the most important part.

That sucks. I thought our Rivian's had external airbags to prevent this type of stuff......
I never thought of external airbags -- but, with more and more sensitive equipment right under the vehicle's "skin", the concept makes sense to me.

It would be exciting to think about the engineering required to assure pre-crash deployment of external airbags, without significant risk to bystanders if an external airbag deployed when it shouldn't.

Sounds like a worthwhile and solvable problem though. Thanks, @lefkonj!

Yeh.. my daughter is having a blast... She got her DL a year ago and she does not want me to touch her car.

I am going to the shop today, with multiple posts about the cost being so high, i am keeping my fingers crossed. Statefarm has been great so far. We will see how they react once the cost comes up.

I am more worried about the from collusion warning nor working now. I have to discuss that specifically with them.

No. Recorded video is not overlayed with vehicle data.

Collision warning and collision avoidance may have been working, but you were just too close/fast for it to stop the vehicle in time (for the "normal" setting). Even with advanced systems and big brakes, physics required to bring 7k+ lbs to a stop remain the same.

Went to the body shop. First impressions, they do not think the damage is big. Front panel replacement, hood repainting and replacing light strip. Obviously, things can change if they find more. I will have full details tomorrow.

I was surprised there were 2 more Rivians in the shop a R1T and an R1S. In addition 3 amazon delivery trucks. Not sure if they had anything to do with the damege to R1's like someone was alluding to 

Shop is charging $180/hr labor for Rivian, Compared to $80 for most of the other vehicles. They are attributing it to the heavy cost of training. This does not make sense. Maybe this will come down over the years??

$80 seems cheap per hour nowadays.

This is why I like using adaptive cruise control while in situations where my senses can get overloaded like when trying to quickly change lanes at the last moment.

One piece of advise that I got from my sister decades ago was to be careful with my tendency to be singularly focused. I think advice saved my bacon countless of times because I'm consciously aware of it.
