We just ordered a set of Recon Grapplers in stock 275/65/20 fitment to replace our stock Pirellis after 22,000 miles. We were pretty close to the wear bars, but ultimately, a blowout yesterday at 65 mph on the HOV with my two young boys prompted an early exit from the Pirellis. Nothing appeared unusual driving yesterday, but I heard a sound like we hit something then some subtle steering differences and all of a sudden "POP!" I saw the tire casing rolling down the HOV while I was slowing down and trying to move over to the side of the lane. Pretty scary when you've got two of your kids in the car stopped and people are blasting by at 70+ mph. Thank goodness everyone is safe and Discount Tire took care of swapping to my full size spare and switching over the TPMS sensor that my wife brought us because a 34" spare doesn't fit nicely anywhere on the car.

All this to say that I'm really looking forward to the Nittos. I've heard great things about them, but on my 100 series land cruiser, I've always run K02s or Falken Wildpeak AT3s. A P-metric Recon Grappler seemed like the best option for what we use the R1S for. Time will tell. Due to my vanity, I just can't get over the psychological hurdle of how non-AT/MTs look on the 20s.

Glad you and the family are safe and I can relate with two young boys. Looking forward to your experience with the Nitto Recon Grapplers.

Wow! Glad to hear everyone is o.k.! A tire failure at freeway speeds is not a pleasant thing to deal with.

I was just about to buy Defender LTX MS/2. )Bought the MS but Costco balked at the weight rating last summer). I saw it was excluded due to width but it has the weight rating, efficiency and mileage lacking in several others. For someone that only does occasional trailhead off-road driving, does the MS/2 have any fatal flaws or flaws due to the < 8" width ? It's odd that given the same 275/60/20 it's size is that much different.

I saw one other post (can't find) where the OP said he removed MS/2's due to poor handling. Not sure if any others have experienced that who installed that posted on this thread. FWIW I plan on using two sets. Winter/Summer. I'm in Central Oregon where we have hills and ice. I kept the stock pirelli's and they did well enough in limited use but a single bad ice melt day is enough to motivate me to get the best possible ice performance. Pehraps with the 115 weight rating change at DT, I can get Michelin Ice-X next winter.
Have put around 1000 miles now on the ms/2s.
Went from 21" stock pirelli to 20" ms/2s with 275/60 to keep the stock 33" overall diameter of the 21s.
I have not experienced handling issues or otherwise to date in spirited driving or highway cruising.
Efficiency seems to be the same or better (I've averaged 2.76 over 11k miles in 2 years of ownership - haven't used conserve mode ever)

This is another good option that's rated well, but it's only rated 115 load index, which is a few pounds less that the recommended.

Also a 275/60
I wish there was a good option in stock size to avoid speedo and efficiency calc/range inaccuracies

Have a data point, although small and anecdotal at this point for a 275/60/20 (original 21s size) wheel and tire combo:
Wheel - Atomic AWZZ 20"
Tire - Nitto Nomad Grappler

On my first medium sized road trip it seemed to not be much of a step down in efficiency compared to stock 21s. Handling felt great and drone/sound level seemed to be much less than I was expecting. To be fair, I have no experience running ATs before so had no idea what to expect.

Any updates on the Nomads? Seem like a good choice for tire width (9.1”)…curious to hear if you have any feedback/pros/cons?

I just went through this exercise with my R1T. I also didn't really need A/T tires, so I went with the Michelin Agilis CrossClimate at Discount Tire. Very happy so far. Much smoother and quieter. Rides better and handles better. Good snow traction.
hi any thoughts on efficiency with the Agilis? Curious how that compares to the OEM AT tires - thanks in advance for any input.
