Just back from an epic road trip from the northwest corner of Washington to Moab, Utah. Covered 2600 miles and spent 5 days off grid on the White Rim Road in Canyonlands National Park. Zero issues with the Rivian, drove like a champ on and off road. Stayed in conserve mode for the highways and off road all terrain for the Canyonlands adventure.
Charging was uneventful, mostly using EA and occasionally having to switch chargers to get it going. This gave me the most worry on the trip, but the worries ended up being unfounded. Found a free Chargepoint 50kw charger in downtown Price, Utah, that wasn’t listed but a friend had used it and told me about it (it’s at the library). Had planned to charge pretty high at Green River but while charging in Spanish Fork had been told by some folks that only one station was working, thus got enough juice to make Moab and charge on the Rivian Waypoint chargers while staying at Under Canvas. Used the 350kwh chargers where possible. Would always start out over 200 but derate to 60-70ish as I got over 75%.
Charged up to 100% overnight at Under Canvas and headed for the White Rim, having 240 miles showing in off road mode when we hit Shafer. First night camp was at Gooseberry arriving with 219 miles range and 81%. Used an induction cooktop for coffee in the morning and left for the next site with 212 miles and 79%.
Arrived at Candlestick campground with 180 range and 67%. Used the induction again for coffee in the morning (dinner was cooked on friend’s propane griddle) and left with 172 miles, 64%,
Third camp was up Taylor canyon for a planned 2 night stay. Arrived with 146 miles of range and 54%. This time the induction cooktop was used for dinner and morning coffee. After two nights, some microburst winds and local cloudbursts, departed to hit the road driving through Capital Reef NP and home. Left the campsite with 129 miles range and 48%, more than enough to make Green River to charge and head out. Total mileage off road was about 130. When we did hit Green River 3 of the chargers were working so we plugged in and headed to Ray’s Tavern for lunch (voted by City Weekly as the best after camping trip hamburger).
On a side note, the iKamper mini 3 held up to the microburst winds and the brief downpours like a champ. It was also well sealed while traveling the dusty roads. Stayed clean inside.
My first long road trip in the Rivian was a smashing success. The truck is very comfortable on long drive days (16 hours from Utah pushing to get home, with 2 drivers). Unscientifically I figured I saved about $150 over taking the same trip in the Tacoma I had before the Rivian.
