Only 1 American Truck Is a 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Winner

April 25, 2023

American pickup trucks have a reputation for toughness, with their ability to take a beating and keep on going. However, when it comes to high-level safety, it’s a different story. There’s only one American truck that earned a 2023 safety award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). And it’s not best-selling trucks like the Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado 1500, or Ram 1500. It’s the all-electric 2023 Rivian R1T, which received a 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award.

2023 Rivian R1T is the only American pickup truck to win a 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award

The 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award for the 2023 Rivian R1T electric pickup truck is highly coveted by automakers. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is respected for its safety and crash test analysis, and many consumers consider the safety awards when making a buying decision.

Also, the fact that the Rivian R1T is the only American truck to get a safety award from IIHS makes the honor even more significant. The only other truck to get honored by IIHS in 2023 is the 2023 Toyota Tundra full-size pickup, which also received a Top Safety Pick+ award.

In 2022, other American trucks received IIHS awards. This includes the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500. However, IIHS implemented more rigid safety requirements in 2023 — and the Rivian R1T and the Toyota Tundra are the only trucks to make the cut.

Question: Will emergency room visits by those who look directly at the cybertruck count against their IIHS rating? ?

That is very impressive for a start-up manufacturing company that has been turning out its product for a little less than two years.

As someone that was in a major collision with a drunk driver last week and the fact myself and my little boy walked away mostly uninjured was pretty solid proof that IIHS is right about the R1T. This was already by far the best truck I’ve ever owned. But after the way it protected Us, there is no way I would ever consider another brand going forward.

I was about to say, no better proof than what happened to this guy and his son. Bravo Rivian.

Ok so I haven't crashed tested my own truck yet...I'll put that on my things to do...but I call BS on their testing methods.

Since I have a Lightning I just looked up the ratings there and I can confidently say their seat belt reminders are not "Poor". It is single handedly the most annoying seat belt reminder system I've used. Far more than the R1T.

I don't have any other comments about the other ratings...

Very happy for this, but that safety comes at a price. Have my R1T in the shop for repairs after backing into a tree at 5mph. Did 27k worth of damage. This is after 9k the last time when someone rear-ended me at about the same speed and dented up my tailgate.

I'm expecting insurance rates to rise in the near future now that there is data on how expensive these are to repair. Maybe the added safety will offset some of that in not paying out medical claims?

Oh a P doesn't mean Poor, it means Pain-in-the-Ass, and based on your feedback, it sounds correct.

The testing literally describes what they are looking for. Also, IIHS hasn't tested Lightnings yet.
